Near to where i work are two theathered horses. They have been there for a few weeks now, and have no access to water until someone comes along with 1 bucked once a day...although lately they havent been coming at al. They are situated opposite the gypsey camp and although look in good condition from afar, i cant get close enough to properly check them over. They have the grass around where they are tethered, but no free access to water.
Is there anything i can do about this? Tempted to call WHW but worried about the repercussions. However, TBH i dont care about those, worried about these two and the youngsters across the road who loook veyr wormy/poor. :(

What could possibly be the repercussions against you?
As long as you don't walk over and tell the gypsies it's you that is reporting them then they'll never know!

Better a call than a dead equine :)
Call WHW or the BHS, both will send an officer to check out the horses.
You do not have to leave your details, but if you want an update after, they will call you to let you know what they are doing about them.

Please, make the call if you are worried :)

You say that they come with a bucket of water once a day - unless you are there the whole time how can you tell they have not come?

They're obviously doing well on 1 bucket of water a day... they haven't died yet!

Sadly, for the majority of busy bodies, tethering horses is not illegal and, given that most tethered ponies will knock over water buckets (mine would do it without being tethered...) I think they're being very dilligent taking fresh water to them every day.

So hows about you spend your 10 hours at work working and leave them be? Just saying...

Wow....thats nice! Ive ignored it for ages and am legitametly worried.... the youngsters across the road arent fairing as well.... They are teathered illegally on the land however

Delicious_D I think you done the right thing, let WHW check them out and decide if anything is wrong, to many people just ignore ill treated horses.

Least i can get some advice from the charity, all i care about is the horses are ok. The teathering issue is neither here nor there, there are no buckets with the horses and its the lack of free access to water i dont like.
God knows how this got into a conversation about whether i work hard or not....and god knows the audacity of such posters on here to try and insult me personally because im a busy body!!! Maybe if it wasnt for such ignorance (calling people busy bodies) then there wouldnt be so many welfare cases about. Maybe we should all wak around with our eyes shut?

I don't mind tethering, but water once a day isn't even enough, and even if they might knock it over they could at least try to provide it, I mean a bucket in a tyre, whatever.

I think you have done the right thing and can't believe anyone would think no water is ok!

I agree totally

Agreed

I cant belive people think there is a link to my working capacity and a horses welfar :confussed:

It's not ideal and I admire you for taking action however there are worse cases Out there .

Completely agree. If i were witness to anything worse (and thankfully have never been), then i wouldnt hesitate in a heartbeat. But i dont know the laws regarding tethering....or where i stood. Silly old me posting on a forum for advice. Must remember to pretend to know it all already

What i will add, what if they continue to be exposed in this weather with no water? If i leave it and they are not cared for, they could become a bigger drain on the charities resources in the long run...

I agree, ring. Surely its better to risk wasting a charities time than risk an animals welfare? Last I heard the rule wasn't 'gather proof of extreme suffering before you call'. If ops wrong, then no harm done. As for comments that op should concentrate on what she's paid to do, get on with her job etc, unless you are actually ops boss then nothing to do with us.

Ahhhh no please don't think I was being nasty in anyway shape or form sorry if it came across that way :) !!!! It's a difficult one but hopefully they will inform owners who perhaps may not understand if horse is healthy in every other asPect that they need water more than once ?

Considering ive won an award for my contribution and have been promoted...i think im doing wel. ;)

By all means, call my manager and ask ;)

I never post on here because they are the strangest lot of " Horseyier than thou "lot ive ever read about. But please op do what you think is right to help these horses if something isn't right.
Before you bombard me with you can't spell, you ride a cob, use gadgets, you don't hunt. I'm off to find a friendlier forum.

I know :)

Horse looks ok to me (but obviously hard to tell from a distance tbh) So no idea about feet or possible ailments. :)

Sometimes education and prevention is better then trying to pick up the pieces afterwards. :)

Define tethered illegally?

And coming out of winter, I'd be more worried if they were anything other than on the thin side. They're never gonna be porkers when they're tethered... but generally it won't kill them, otherwise they wouldn't tether them!

A couple of months ago I stopped at side of road to check on a horse that was tethered - went over - gave it a pat - I was worried as I couldnt see the chain and it looked like it was loose near the road !

As I was giving it a pat (at this point had realised it was tethered very securely) 4 men in a car pulled up and asked if everthing was ok - I just explained I was worried it wasnt tethered as couldnt see chain - we had a little chat I commented on what a nice pony it was and they explained that in their camp it was too muddy for the horse hence tethering and police were aware ....

One way of checking if it is being seen regularly is to see if it has eaten all the grass around it, this one had lovely fresh grass meaning they had been moving it regularly - it also looked in good condition.

I wished them well and left - better to check than leave it but it can be done in a friendly way - walk over comment on what nice horses they are and give them a pat that should halp you decide if anything needs to be done.

On land not belonging to them :)

Didnt realise you were their spokesperson!!!

You told a horse that?

Mine would often tip her bucket over in the morning and then not get checked on until the evening, thus going a whole day without water (knew it was morning from the fact it was always bone dry!)

Her other favourite trick was dropping muddy sods of earth into her bucket making it undrinkable, again, for the whole day.

Seriously. Wild horses don't have water at all times and tethered horses don't die from being watered once or twice a day. Get over it!
