Have heard mixed views on this but was wondering if it's better to give the mare a tetnus shot a few weeks before foaling or waiting til foal is born and give them both one when foal is few hours old?

If your mare isn't covered yearly as a norm then I'd want her jabbed a month before foaling and foal given an anti-tet the day of foaling when it (and the mare) are checked over by the vet.

Thanks Maesfen, the mare is up to date with her annual vaccs (got them in november) and last time she foaled (4 years ago) the foal just got a shot when the vet came to check him a few hours after he was born. I'd just been talking to some one else who said they always give the mare a tet shot a few weeks before she foals regardless of when she had her annual vacc and wondered if this is usual?

Stand to be corrected, but if she's been done in November, I'd still do her now and this jab should last for another year so her booster moves from November to April/May so that if you have another foal from her she's all up to date. That's what I have done with my mares anyway and they're all due early March, makes life so much easier and one less thing to worry about as I have a head like a sieve so getting them all done at the same time helps me a lot.

We do the mares within the month prior to foaling regardless of vaccination status, and all the foals are done within 24 hours of birth. Very very nasty disease and not worth risking in any way shape or form IMO.

We do all breeding stock for flu & tet in December - stallions, mares, teasers, foster mares. The later foaling mares get a further tet jab mid season (March). All foals have a tet jab on their day 1 check and on day 2 have IgG bloods taken.

Thanks everyone, I'll talk to my vet and get him to give her a shot, can't be too careful! She's not due for another 5 weeks anyway. Thinking about it last time she foaled, she got her annual vaccs in march and foaled in may, I've since tied the whole yard in together so they get them all at the same time. She'll have to go out of sync again! Also reminded me I'm due a tetnus booster myself!!
