I honestly think that if I hadn't been wearing it today I would be in hospital!!!

Due to bad weather Mr C and I have not been on a hack for about 3-4 weeks and have not been on the roads for at least 2 months.

Today I took him out with one of my friends into the forest for a nice calm hack to get them back into it.

We decided to enter via the road to start building up their road work again and it did not begin well when the normally unflappable Mr C had a tizzy a the first vehicle we came across with happened to be a tractor - I should have taken that as an omen!

Rest of the road was fine, passed some vans and cars and he settled.

In the forest they were good - both a bit excited on their first canter and Mr C did try and overtake and muscle the other horse off the track which seems to be his new trick.

We'd had about 3 or 4 nice controlled trots and canters and were nice and relaxed and decided to have another canter - big mistake - the horses went from walk to gallop and started racing. C was behind trying to keep up and I did have some limited control of him but he was galloping so fast that I couldn't actually sit in the saddle to use my seat to slow him.

So here we are galloping uncontrollably with me wondering if perhaps this is how fast this girl usually goes (haven't hacked with her before) and thinking I should perhaps ask her to slow down. Suddenly, a fox runs out of the bushes - cue a spook to the right by both horses causing me to be slightly off balance to the left. I thought I could recover until I realised we were galloping into the path of a large wooden pole - Casper dodged it unfortunatley to the right again scupering any chance I had of regaining my balance, I came flying off through the air and met the pole at high speed and ended up wrapped around it while the horses continued to gallop away.

I actually thought my chest had collapsed - I could not breath - my poor friend came rushing over white as a ghost expecting me to be dead or unconcious. Fortunately I'd worn my BP - I nearly didn't bother but because we were going out on the road I thought it best to! Poor girl feels responsible because she was infront but I couldn't see that she was desperately trying to stop her horse the whole time!

So instead of having broken ribs I have just slightly sore one, a very sore bruised hand and an horrible big scrap on my arm. My friend, who has been riding for about 15 years says it's the worst fall she has ever seen and is still really upset about it -poor girl!

It just shows - you can never be too careful! One good thing that has come out of this is that I don't think anyone will be going into the forrest without their BP!!!

OMG, thank god you were wearing your body protector, it does make you think! Hope you don’t ache too much tomorrow. Take it easy!

I hope your ok, thats sounds horrible. I was in a similar situation on our boxing day hunt. I was riding an ex pointer that i had and it was a nice day so i decided to leave my back protector at home as it does not fit under my jacket! it was going well she was jumping good went over a hairy jump (steep drop to left on landing) and missed a few bodies on other side then my martingale broke, hopped off fixed then she was going bit mad as too many horses in front! Got back up in front telegraph pole to jump, tap on shoulder to listen up and she glanced off and hit it chest first! I went careering like superwoman down the field as she got cast on the other side between it and the ditch! I got up ran back rolled her out and she was fine! completed the rest! Unfortunately she didnt feel any worse for wear the next week (not even stiff) and i had 3 cracked ribs, a painful 3 months! Your very lucky im glad to say

Thqat really could have been nasty but for your BP. So many people think they aren't "cool" but this proves their worth IMHO.

thank goodness that you are ok, and good job you had your BP on. I know people think I am nuts, but I always wear my BP I am usually the only one at dressage with one on - but I know my balance is iffy so i do.

Hope you're not too stiff tomorrow.

Thanks everyone - the pain is kicking in now - my hand is killing me but amazingly my ribs aren't really sore at all. My neck muscles are in agony though - it hit it with such force that my head must have swung forward as I found my hat lying nearby - was planning on having a gentle wander in the school tomorrow but now thinking that might not be a good idea.

Have taken some nice strong pain killers and ordered myself a curry to cheer myself up!

Ohh I am so glad I have ordered myself a Raceafe RS2000, I shall pick it up in 10 days when I visit Wales on holiday and ride my new horse (bay in sig) for the first time at my sisters yard.

I decided to buy one as my Dutch Sports horse (grey in sig) is a crazy, spooky, sharp nutter on times, perfect to ride in winter when on ad lib hay, always a complete nutter in the summer even when on limited grass and no cereal feed, he just gets UM sugarbeet and a little bit of chaff to take his supplements in.

Your story has made me feel better about spending the money (even when I get trade prices I still hate outlaying money on me, horses all fine, me I hate it especially for purely functional items). In the past week I have spent over £1500.00 on tack and feel a bit sick as I bought Anna the bay in sig last month and have to spend £1500.00 to get her shipped to Norway, ohh not a good month for me, I am glad I married a rich farmer that likes to spoil me lol! Well I do have my own business so I dont feel so bad...

I am so glad you are ok, I had a pony bolt through forestry with me when I was a kid...not fun!
