Mare is coughing again, heaving a little too :(

Had a copd attack 18 months ago - led to colic - almost led to pts hence I freak out every time she coughs.

I have been steaming her hay with much success but every month or so she develops a bad cough for the night, you can probably recall last months panic... I called the vet he said he would keep her in mind and come if I thought necessary but she didn't worsen.

Tonight will be a sleepless night, YO took her hay away at last check and I have just been up to give her some wet mash which she ate. She did cough probably 20 times in 15 minutes but I stood with her after she had eaten and she stood quiet for a good 15 minutes.

Gah. Horses! I hope, like last time, it doesnt worsen and will be gone by morning. Yo is going to check her before she goes to bed and text me.

Will ask very lovely Yo if I can get big bale haylage in, I hope she doesn't mind!

Sorry for ranting!

Haylage is god's gift to allergic, resp issue horse owners. In my case, it's me who coughs with hay though ;)

We changed to haylage winter of 2011/12 and I think I may prefer it! We have only had one dodgy bale (stank horribly) the rest has been great. It seems to be more consistant than hay and we have had less coughing with it. (fortunately none of ours have been particularly bothered) The only issue you might have is how it will keep, if you are only feeding one on it.
