It is terrible and I wish it would stop, so sad that horses/ponies/foals are being bred and sold for nothing like that. There really should be something done, I am not sure what can be done but I do wish it would stop
 
i agree defra cover the welfare of farm livestock there doesn't seem to be anybody to wave a big stick at these people who are breeding ponies quite indiscriminately for nothing, why do it what is their mentality?
i know of a person who has over 70 mares foals and youngstock, some he paid good money for as they are very well bred, but is contemplating taking colts direct to the knackers yard because they are worth nothing,[ at least they don't have to suffer markets i suppose!] why breed so many in the first place, and they are not well looked after either, he has already been banned for cruelty to his cattle and sheep so the ponies stand no chance. the breeders who he bought the good quality stallions and mares from would be horrified if they knew where they were going.
 
But just remember, some are also going unsold - they can't even get anyone to bid in the first place, and I do worry about what happens to those. :( It is a terrible state of affairs for everyone, it costs more to passport and microchip them than that.
 
We live just down the road and we normally go to Bampton Fair but decided against it this time and glad I did. I would have been in tears and begging OH to let me bring them home.

When I spoke to the Moorland Mousie trust when we visited them last year I am sure they said they had someone go to the fair to keep an eye on the ponies and that they bought the ones that didn't sell. Maybe they couldn't do it this year - every one seems full :(

Good luck to the ponies and their new owner, hope they can begin to thrive now.
