hi all,
i've been waiting for the Animal Pharmacy to come back online (after they told me via email it would be 1-3weeks) and now the site is saying they will be reopening in January. SO... Does anyone know of any similar sites? ie - whereby i can buy some bute/Danilon without a prescription?

[i'll explain as i am sure some will ask why i am buying without a prescription - i have a horse will long term health issues, used to get bute by the box from vets, vets now changed their policies and now insist on seeing the horse every 6 months, hence just for them to come along and say, yes, he still has bone spavin and is lame it will cost me £60 plus the cost of the bute/danilon, and they dont seem to want to do prescriptions either, plus they still charge a hidious amount for them/want to see the horse at regular intervals and it is not practical]

Why are you trying to buy POM with a prescription!
No vet can charge amounts for prescription.
Change you vet.

My vet will write me a prescription for Bute/ Danilon, Liquid intermuscular anti-biotics and injection tips.

You need a decent vet.

Buying POMs without prescription is ILLEGAL

i first found out about the animal pharmacy from here, and i know quite a few HHOers have used it. i guess they ship it in from europe or something?

both of our local vets have changed their policies, but then again they are both all about the £££ !!! quite a few other people who use them have tried arguing it with them as their horses are on bute etc long term, but they are sticking to their guns on it that they want to visit the horse every 6months.

Vets, since 01/11/08 are allowed to charge for writing prescriptions, and some are charging a lot, there is nothing to stop them. The rules has been for years that an animal must be seen within six months before a prescription can be written, so demanding to see an animal every six months is normal.

Sorry, no idea where you may be able to get Bute without a script.

I'm in the same position and have just booked my vet to come next tuesday. It is about 18 months sice they saw her though. I rang and asked how much it will cost and they said £37 for visit and probably a part exam charge if any. They price match the bute so if i find it cheaper on line they will match the price. How much are you paying for a box?

Well Ted is on long term bute.. and i buy it off the vets, without the added shippin costs it works out cheeper for me.
They dont charge call ou (even tho usually i have them out every 4 months for summit or other, and they will issue me with a 100 box for £41

i guess on a postive note there is another girl on my yard in the same situation so if needs be we can share the call out but that will only bring it down by 12.50

they apparently cannot process orders? They originally said it would be 1-3 weeks due to major technical problems, hence i have hung on and kept checking to see if it was back online, but now its saying January on the offline page. I guess i could only ask them

As a point of interest.

Would you be happy if you yourself were on long term medication - that could have cummulative side effects - and your GP said he didn't need to see you for year after year and that could could just have a repeat whenever you wanted it? No follow-ups, referals etc???

As a human, if you feel the effect of the medicine is diminishing or that maybe you are getting new symptoms/ side effects you can go to the doctor and ask him. Your horse/pet cannot do this and relies on the Vet to spot these things before they become a problem.

Just think about that!

I would be happy to not be seen if i had a life long condition - because i do! I was under a consultant at the other end of the country and sometimes it gets to a point whereby the travelling every few months is stupid when things dont change.
IF my horses condition changed, then i would get the vet, simple as that and i feel you are missing the point. The vets said i should bute him daily if i wanted to continue to ride him, i dont believe in that hence we agreed that i would retire him and give him bute depending on how he was doing at the time (as it does depend on the weather etc). Vets dont 'spot' things with my horses condition, its me, his daily carer that sees how he is doing day to day, not a vet who sees him for 10 minutes!
My OP just asks if anyone knows of any other sites that are like the animal pharmacy - i know this is an open forum and people like to give their input but i do wish that people would stick to the original post, this place has changed so much in the time i have been on here.
anyway, rant over. i know my horse, his condition, his needs etc.

ETA - I actually dont agree with some of the things the animal pharmacy sells as in the wrong hands, well, i dread to think! eg. i paid over £25 to have one of my mares jabbed into season earlier this year, i could have bought a bottle of the stuff for about £9 - would i though - no way on this earth!
