Well vet came out yesterday and my normally cant-wait-to-let-it-all-hang-free boy decided to come over all shy! With a bit of help from his mollasses lick he decided to let her have a peek! Vets first thought was that it was a tumour, cue me having a major panic attack! Without sedating him she wouldn't have had much chance of getting a good look, so he was duly sedated and she then proceeded to remove the largest bean she had ever seen ... it was huge and she had to break it up to remove it.

I felt really bad as its a standing joke on my yard that my boy has the cleanest bits of all the geldings on the yard. He was disgusting! She gave him a thorough clean whilst he was sedated, and I did ask her views on the great 'to clean or not' debate. She recommended cleaning but no more than once or twice a year. The pocket that the bean was situated in was quite large/stretched, whether due to his anatomy or whether the bean had caused the skin to stretch she couldn't say, but did say that my boy will probably be more prone to getting beans.

By this point we had quite an audience with most of the geldings owners never having heard of a 'bean' let alone checking their boy's bits.

Think a mass Willy cleaning session with vet (and plenty of sedation) in attendance may be on the cards!

Don't feel bad! You've found it, and dealt with it - and once again proved that geldngs' sheaths SHOULD be checked and cleaned when necessary!

Most of my geldings (and stallions) are fine with having their sheaths cleaned - because it's part of their 'routine'. We start with a hose-pipe, after work when they're warm. Once they've had cold water squirted up there a few times (and failed to stop it with kicking!) then a bucket of warm water and a clean cloth is no hardship!

I have a piece of the bean as a souvenir and it makes my eyes water just looking at it and according to the vet the piece I have us only about a third of its original size! I will take a photo later and try and fathom out how to post it on here!

he must feel a whole lot better now :). I reckon the once/twice year is about right/sensible. Frank is getting a complex that I keep trying to peer at his. I've promised not to grab it for a proper look until next weekend at least ;) :p

Thank you for the update Bertolie, hopefully those that think they should leave well alone will at least go and have a rummage now just to make sure ;)

I think I'm going to be paranoid about checking him now, especially as the vet said he will probably be more prone to getting them. Good job he likes to let it all hang out at any opportunity!

My gelding gets lots of yucky black tar down his legs so when that happens, I clean it with warm water and clean sponge. Normally I have to do it about every 10 days - so any "anti willy cleaning" bods, explain to me how else I go about his shocking personal hygiene - I would be interested.
