Looking for a new winter turnout for my 15.1hh thoroughbred but I don't know what size/make to buy!

Last year I used a 5ft 9" weatherbeeta but it rubbed his shoulders so I bought him a 6ft weatherbeeta for the summer but that slides back. He has a 5ft 9" weatherbeeta fleece which fits him fine and a 5ft 9" weatherbeeta stable rug which is okay (slightly small).

I bought him a 6ft FAL stable rug which absolutely drowns him!

I was thinking about buying him a Rambo Supreme or Rhino Plus but I don't know what size to buy now and don't want to waste all that money buying the wrong size!

Why are all rug sizes so different?!

Why not use Bale Twine to measure your horse from centre of chest to bum, withers to top of tail and depth of girth - then go to a saddlers (wherever) lay the rug on the floor and compare your twine with the rug! I've done that before and I don't care that I look like a wally, just saves taking rugs back!!! My horse is wide, 15.3hh and I bought him the Mark Todd Heavy Weight with detachable neck last year - fitted beautifully, hardly any rub marks and he had it on all winter. I got it as a bargain £150 reduced to £78!!!

I have my TB (15.3HH) in Horseware Amigo l/w and m/w and they fit a treat, she also has a weatherbeeta Arion combo which fit's ok, but not as good as the Horseware rugs......

I would do as Michelle73 say's and measure and then take it to the shop, I'm sure they would let you exchange it if it is not right, as long as you try it over a summer sheet so as not to get hairs on it..........

I have a heavyweight rambo(400g)for my tb and it fits so well-really shaped and doesnt rub at all and keeps him toasty-i couldnt reccomend it enough!

Yes I suppose measuring would be a good idea (I'm not really thick, honest!!!) Does anyone know how Rhino rugs come up size wise (eg, are they bigger or smaller than Weatherbeeta) as I have found a website where they are on offer but don't know whether to go for 6ft or 5ft 9!

get a nice pair of snuggy horse pyjamas and then a nice medium weight rug as lighter for the horse

my boy is long in the back and takes 6ft rambo

if you get the wug or wug plus type the neck line helps to stop the rug sliding back

I have always found that the rhino's are ok for normal to narrow builds (which you probably come in to!) however the amigo range seem to fit the wider chest and fuller figure!

My 16.2hh tb has had her rhino wug lite for 6 years - fits perfect and no rubs!! Wouldn't buy anything else! tried Masta - rubbed her raw, shires - didn't fit at all. Ended up with the rhino and a rambo - perfect!! By the way she takes a 6'3".

For my TB who is really narrow at the shoulders i have found that the tesco rugs and premier equine rugs fit him best.

I had 2 kingshead ones that fitted perfect at first but the straps seemed to stretch so gaped at the shoulders.

I havent tried any of the more expensive makes as i can justify spending that much on a rug!

My TB x (very slim build) wears a Weatherbeeta Arion combo all winter. Fits him well. Otherwise I have a summer Amigo turnout which fits him really well too - I might consider buying an Amigo HW for this winter as a second rug.

Yep, FAL's are very generous! Drowns my one too! Best stable rug I have is a Rhinegold Kentucky combo (they're on Ebay). I got it for a bargain price £25 and its lasted ages and is so cosy!

Hi I have a 15.3 hh TB, she takes a 6ft weatherbeeta and has a 6ft Rhino which is a great rug but slightly small so am going to get it cleaned and flog it. I'd say that the Rhino Combo that I have (the blue check one) comes up a bit smaller than a 6ft weatherbeeta. Hope that helps!
