1. Does this mean we're heading out of winter now?

2. How on earth do you manage the carpets that come off them? Any good tools etc? I persevered with my rubber curry comb last year but it unsuprisingly took me FOREVER!

I used to use one of those black brick type things. Looked a bit like a pummice stone if you know what I mean? It was great at getting shed loads off and didn't seem to pull at the coat too much.

Don't envy you with the whole de furring. Full clip was the only answer for me. x

Oh yes! Ive had my shedding blade out today! It seems just the belly area at the moment. Once I switched from a curry come to a shedding blade I wondered how I ever got on without one!!

Thank God I dont have to do this with Melly! I full clipped her last weeek as I couldnt stand the thought of trying to get the 2inch thick/4inch long hair off her! I still have Seri to moult out, but she isnt as hairy! My friend has an older pony who she doesnt clip, and she uses a shedding blade, its brilliant, and Im definately getting one to do Mels legs and Seri's coat with!

No its a metal blade in a pear shape with plastic handles, it doesnt hurt them mine love a good scratch with them.
Hang on ill find a link to a pic

Shedding blade: In special weather conditions, a metal shedding blade with short, dull teeth is used to remove loose winter hair. A shedding blade is also useful for removing caked-on mud. However, grooming tools with metal teeth can split and dull the horse's hair coat and may irritate the skin, so must be used with appropriate care. Likewise, metal grooming tools used on sheep and show cattle may also be too harsh to use on a horse.

Shedding blade is definitely the way forwards - I got one when my Fell's coat was changing at the end of summer and he was moulting all over the place and was very itchy. Worked an absolute treat and didn't seem to harm his coat, has been super shiney all winter. :D
