Just a general post to ask other dog lovers what their favourite and most coveted breed of dog they hankered after when they were children. I had a thing for Border Collies and Bernese Mountain dogs for some inexplicable reason! After 5 years of continous demanding I received the most wonderful dog ever, CKCS x Shetland Sheepdog.

GSD GSD GSD

Other breeds I have admired from childhood are English Bull Terriers, Afghan Hounds, Salukis, Dutch Herders, Komondorok and Beaucherons.
The only one I think I could own, realistically and logistically, would be a Beaucheron.

Vizslas!

Stoopid woman going after my childhood dreams...I'm paying for it now! I also really wanted a pet elephant when I was a child, thank god I didn't act on that one as well!

Collies..we have only ever had collies, not to work sheep or do agility but just as pets.We are on our third collie now all owned from pups.Jake we had for ten years,Spot for nearly 18 years and we now have a 16 month old.

Greyhounds are also a breed i have always loved because my late uncle used to breed, train and race them.

Haha Hen that is a good point, I was so blase about dogs, always having them around, until I wised up and thought 'hang on, these guys are cheaper, and you can get rosettes with them, too, and you can't fall off them!!!'

I grew up with Labs and Whippets, so either would do for me, guess what I have half of each in 1 dog - bonus!!!
Also liked greyhounds, I just might rescue one, watch this space...

All you lucky souls that were born into families with dogs! For at least six years as a child, number one on my Christmas and Birthday lists was a dog! The demands and emotional blackmail my poor parents had to put up with from me. Still, got my own home and got myself plenty of hounds now! Patience is a virtue and all that!

I never had any pets when I lived at home despite begging constantly.

I blame my parents for me moving to a farm and now having all these cows, four horses, two dogs, four cats, hens, ducks, guinea fowl, tropical fish and a rabbit.

I remember when my mum's great old bitch died, she was one of the most successful show dogs in her day and a lovely pet.
I was about nine or ten and I just said to her: "It's OK mum, don't cry, we have another one!"

Ain't it the truth.

I was 11 when we finally got a dog. Wore the ole folks down so much in the end, they had no choice but to surrender......... Mission accomplished.

I funnily enough wanted a sheltie too

I ended up with a border collie for my first dog cos she was going to be drown....mam said it's the puppy collie thats gonna drown or the sheltie it's up too you? not much choice then

she was a fab little dog and clever as hell.......I was suprised mam let me have her as we only ever had Gsd's approx 20 of them at the time I got misty my collie.

I always wanted a Weimaraner (spl?!) See, can't even spell it now! Lol. No idea why, I think I just liked their yellowy eyes and coat colour.

Don't think I ever "wanted" a dog as a child, as I was born surrounded by them. My mum bred GSDs and my gran, who we lived with, had a boarding kennels, so really my big wish was for a pony. There has only ever been one breed for me needless to say, although I do like lots of others, I had a lovely whippet when I ws about 5 and latterly had a Lancashire Heeler, who was a great little dog although quite challenging to train.

Border Collie, Dalmation, Irish Setter, Samoyed, Weimmeraner (sp?!) golden retriever

can you tell I wasn't brought up with dogs?! Never had a dog until my 21st birthday when my boyfriend bought me Beau!!!

Well I got my border collie!

I think I might need to move to a farm before I can get any of the others!

GSD,siberian husky, bernese mountain dog,Irish wolfhound and Border collie and Rough collie?the lassie type dog?

What we had was an assortment of Labs and lab cross'....
with the odd brief inclusions of the various strays that people dumped at the end of our road until the dog warden colleted them

I still hate to see the dog wardens vans even as kids we knew those dogs had no chance but we werent allowed keep them
crazy.gif

(p.s i know the warden has a valuable role and its the owners that are the problem,
im just being odd about the van because there were some lovely dogs dumped near us...Skippy was a lassie type dog, laddie a terrier who looked like a corgi, rex was a skinny lurcher greyhound looking type and then I learned to stop naming them....)

I always wanted an Alsation - I'm so old that's what they were called then ! Still would like to have one but I got a collie instead when I left home and have had collies ever since ....

Always wanted a collie and I eventually got one when I was 10!!
I always wanted a pippin dog. The one when she goes up in the spotty plane?
I also wanted a brum car....

St Bernard.

We rescued one when I was about 18 and he was lush but.. and its a big but mum couldn't cope with the slobbers down her kitchen walls so he ended up living in the utility room. The other problem was he died at 8 and we weren't prepared that he wouldn't live long. A heart attack and the vet said 8 is about right for a big dog.

RIP Uncle Boris

My mum wanted a dalmatian- not because of the spots because they're good around horses (used to be used as carriage dogs)
Unfortunately the time she started to look into them, 101 Dalmatians came out not long after- so she waited a few years so she could see sensible breeders and be seen as a sensible owner. And she now has one (not sure if she'd have another mind you!)

For me I have always wanted a toy poodle or mini schnauzer since I was early teens- now 20 and still interested in the same breeds.
Although I admit to a growing fondness of labs- never really liked them until I got to know the farm dog who is just the sweetest thing and if I ever wanted a bigger dog it's now a breed I'd definitely consider.

Always wanted a Pug or Rottie when I was very young.

Then I then took a liking to German Short/wired haired pointers and once convinced every1 we got one 2years ago.

We've always had boxers and probs always will.

My first dog was a collie and I said after that I only want collies. I now have collie x spaniels so sort of stuck to the plan. After seeing a GSD everyday I've now realised I like them too so thats next. Oh and the OH has always wanted a Dalmatian. Can't wait to move out so I can start extending my doggie family, now just to convince the OH

At the rescue I saw a massive weimaraner that was so quite and looked lovely but my mum said he was too big so when I named our 2 I named charlie after him
smile.gif
I hope he found a nice home, I hate going to rescues I just want to take them all with me regardless of their breed.
