Took one of my girls to the vets on Friday for her booster and before us was the most beautiful grey / silver cane corso boy who was clearly an elderly gentleman, 10 as it transpired.

But when I went in my vet said that they are on the verge of becoming a banned breed in this country. Is this correct ?. I have come across a few in my time and not one has given me cause for concern and nor have I heard of them being a problem.

The other thing he was saying was that a lot of dogs are recorded as
' mastiff ' or ' boxer' and if the vet has any suspicion that they have the DNA of a banned breed they must inform the police. Again this strikes me as ludicrous as surely you will deter responsible owners from seeking help for their pet incase they are reported.

Any thoughts ?

The breed is not banned but they may be "of the type" which is banned.

DNA is not valid and most vets would not know a pitbull if one sat on them. They have no obligation to inform anypne and in fact that would be a breech of confidentiallity.

I saw a very stylish pitbull yesterday being walked along the pavement. No doubt and no way it would be able to be walked openly in many areas. If however it was ever involved in an "incident" then it would get seized.

The DDA does need an overhaul, it was brought in in a rush with no consultaion to dog societies etc I cannot see anymore 'breeds' being added, unless the whole thing gets overhauled, the RSPCA and Dogs trust etc are trying to get changes made, but by making it less breed specific, not more. As it stands any dog of any breed if it meets the measurements held by the police and those who are 'trained' to identify a DDA section 1 dog, then it would fall under that legislation. Those dogs that meet those measurements are usually of the pitbull or cross type. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1991/65/section/1 see section 1(c)

with regards to vets reporting suspect dogs to the police, i imagine this would be very dependant on the individual vets, if the temperament of the dog is such that reporting it might avert a possible problem then they may feel duty bound to report it??
