Hi All,

To keep it brief, i have had my bengal kitten for about 2 months now.. he is about 4 1/2 months old and has been fantastic since i have had him - he has been put straight into a routine whereby he has acess in the day to most of the house but we shut certain rooms - bathrooms, my bedroom etc when we are not there. At night he goes into his own room (yes he really does) where has has his bed/activity centre/litter tray/food/toys etc... he gets shut in his room when we go to bed and gets let out in the morning as soon as he hears us get up!

Well Sunday morning and this morning i woke up to find he had chewed and pulled up a good corner piece of the carpet and threaded it right by the door in his room!! Why he has suddenly done this i dont know... i thought it was just a one off thing on Sunday morning when he did it the first time but clearly not as he has done the exact same this morning... We dont let him out as he just sits at our bedroom door screaming and scraping the door and if we let him in he thinks its playtime!

Any ideas/suggestions/advice would be greatly received!!!

Thank you!! :o)

No advice I'm afraid. All my cats past and present have scratched the carpet if they want to get through a door.

If we are going to shut our cats in its in the kitchen as there isn't any carpet to scratch.

Thanks for the reply... i completely understand what your saying but its just strange that suddenly he has started doing it!!

Like i say if we let him have free run at night into our room he thinks its playtime but if we shut him out he scratches the door and howls!!

The urge to think "all night is playtime" will subside over time...and if you ignore his antics, he will learn quickly to leave you alone while you're sleeping (unless he's hungry!). In the end, you'll probably have less trouble if you just let him wander where he wants in the house at night!

Re. the carpet damage: you can reduce damage by clipping his claws every two weeks or so, but to discourage him from scratching, there are a few options which are not always effective, so you may need to try a few:

1. special sprays that are supposed to be unpleasant. I've not found these to work, but you may have better luck!
2. home versions, such as cayenne pepper where you don't want him to scratch.
2. double-sided tape. Needs to be double-sided so it'll stick to the area you want him to avoid (works for countertops too), and he won't like stepping on the top sticky side!

Thanks for the reply, i'll give anything a go!! Its a brand new carpet so as you can imagine i wasn't best pleased this morning when i found it for the 2nd morning on the trot!! ;0)

Sorry i know its a bit long winded but does anyone else have anymore ideas??

somebosy mentioned to me about putting pepper down in that area and said he wouldnt go near it??

My cat lived on newpaper, I've never heard of them not liking it. Try putting his fav food in a ball sounds to me like he's fed up with being locked in one room and wants out. Put things in there that make him think, not just the usual toys he has. Ours had a plastic bottle with beeds in it to keep him entertaned. He was very affraid of it to begin with but then loved it after. Also make sure that any toys you have for him don't look/feel like carpet. Hope you find an answer to it.

My friend has 2 Bengal cats, and she tried shutting them in the house and not letting them out as she didnt want them stolen but as they got older they would run riot round the house and destroy carpets and furniture etc, so in the end she let them out in her garden, she has fields behind her and they go out in the day and she shuts them in at night. She says with the exercise they get in the day they are now happy to sleep at night.

Remember cats are designed to run and hunt so need a lot of play and exercise to tire them out.

Thanks for the advice guys, i just think its strange he has been fine being shut in over night - literally when we go to bed he does and when i wake up at 6.30 he is let out to explore the house! He hasn't had a problem with this until now ... last night i left the door open and he stood and howled at our bedroom door constantly and scratched the door until 4.30am when we finally put him back in his room and he chewed my carpet up again..... what to do!???!??!?? HELP ;o(
