Following on from the "cost of feeding" thread where the op is spending over £30 each week to feed 3 ponies, How much does your horse or pony cost to feed each week??

I currently have 10 ranging from Welsh A to 16.2 ISH .4 are in at night, 2 in during the day the other 4 are out 24/7

The ones in at night have a fibre based diet, plenty of haylage and Fast Fibre apart from 1 which will not eat it, he gets a mix as he is a competition horse and needs something other than haylage.
The ones that are in during the day get FF for breakfast and adlib haylage while they are in.
The ones living out get no feed but have some haylage if there is not enough grass.
I do feed some supplements, as required for the individual. They are all very well, good coats and fit enough to do the work required.

My main expense is the haylage, I buy big bales which is very economical and I probably average £25 per week at the moment for feed plus the cost of the haylage, this will rise as winter sets in and the outside ones either come in or get fed outside.

So what does yours cost to feed and could you make savings without compromising your horses health??

i'm very lucky, my boy is cheap as chips to keep. H e is out 24/7, no hay in field yet and 1 bale of hay lasts 2 weeks as he only munches on a net when he is being groomed before riding. No suppliments. Just good varied grazing.

At the moment Phil is on;

Hi fi lite (will be finished by the end of this week but this has lasted 4 months!)
Pasture mix (to encourage him to eat his supps - lasted approx 2 months)
Turmeric
= £2.87 a week

Plus £8 on hay.

He was previously on cortaflex and boswellia, but the turmeric seems to be working just as well.

When he has finished the above he will be on Spillers lite balancer and possibly hi fi lite again just to bulk it out.

£19.46 - Two are on fast fibre and Ride and relax, one is on topspec balancer, topspec turbo and alfa a They all have a couple of biscuits of hay as well.

Ad lib hay or haylage is included in winter livery price (£20 per week more than summer price but includes forage and shavings): about £12 max?

Double handful hi fi lite with a splash of watery speedibeet 2x daily with (minimum) recommended pink powder: £5 - 6 per week max

Total of about £18 per week for 16hh 20yo warmblood :)

Ermm not much at moment at all. My horse is currently having:

grass= free
hi fi original = £10 (bag seems to last forever!)
Dengie Lesiure vitamins = £18.00
carrots included in livery cost

Probably works out at less than £3 per week. But my horse is currently only having a small feed after being ridden about 3 times per week.

Not a lot!

There are all out 24/7 and have a mineral lick (magnesium/copper/zinc etc) in the field that they adlib. It lasts at least a month! costs just under £15.

If anything needs feeding i feed either fastfiber for the fatties or speedibeet or grass nuts for the skinnies. Nothing is being fed right now and a bag of these feeds at under £10 last me ages. Months.

I also buy a bag of hifi lite to slow them down. This too lasts months.

We make our own hay so it costs less than buying it in.

very lucky where we are!

Mines on full livery and all hay/hard feed is included, but if on DIY, she would be on a scoop of chaf and some speedibeet as needed also adlib hay when in.

She's a good doer so doesn't need a vast amount, her feet are in fantastic shape, top line is shaping up nicely and her weight is just right going into winter.

At the minute, for two, 2 bags of Top Spec lite a month about £50 some cheap chaff to pad it out about £16 a month and then I'm going to add some beet when it gets cold- was debating cutting back on the balancer due to cost but don't think a vits and mineral supplement would even be cheaper? Possibly thinking about switching to happy hoof, beat and mineral lick to save some cash- just so worried they get what they need though! also on daily turnout about 7 hours and a haynet at night, plus one at breakfast and lunch if in

Roo has about half a scoop of spillers happy (or is it healthy) hooves a day, mainly just to put her glucosamine + msm supplement in. The bag lasts a few months! :)

New horse doesnt have any feed as hes a good doer (only had him a month so maybe he will at some point)

Hay I seem to go through alot! Not sure how much yet though

Both 18 year old Mare and yearling get speedi beet and hifi mol free .

She gets 16plus cubes he gets sure grow and bill is 42 quid every 5 to 6 weeks

2 bags of ready mash a month - £23
1 bag alpha oil lasts nearly 3 months - £4
1 bag speedibeet lasts nearly 3 months - £3
1 bag grass nuts lasts nearly 3 months - £3

so £33 a month plus £35 a month in hay.

Markie get fast fibre, fibergy and Baileys no4, plus linseed and garlic. It has been about £25 a month, but it will increase over the winter as the amount of Baileys will increase as the grass decreases. I'm anticipating a large, round bale of hay will last about a month (first winter with him), at £30 each, when he comes in at night.
Still, he's cheaper to feed than my sons!

I'm not sure I really want to think about it!

Veteran gets through a sack a week of veteran vitality, new boy about 1/2 sack calm & condition. About 2/3 sack of alfa-a oil between them, they are both on pink powder and Cortaflex, so estimate hard feed prob £30 week

Then haylage! They get through about 56lbs/day between them, so prob £35/week.

So they cost me approx £140 each per month to feed. Good thing I have deep pockets :rolleyes;

My TB gets through a big rectangular bale of hay in about 6 weeks (costs £55) at the moment so that works out at about £36 a month.
Hard feed (if you can call it that) is HiFi, kwick beet (bag lasts for months), 2-3 bags of fibre nuts, pink powder and supermarket sunflower oil which works out at around £35 a month.
So that's £70 odd pounds a month in total.
I'm pleased with that!

At moment he is free to feed! :)
He is currently on his winter hols so lives out 24/7.

Normally when he is fed it costs about £10-15 a month as is on straights - bag of maize, barley and oats. The oats last 2 months, barley lasts usually about a month and the maize lasts about a month. Chaff is free! :)
Our hay is free too this year, but as he lives out its really only When away he gets hay!

15,1 show cob around £5 per week happyhoof and cod liver oil few carrots happyhoof lasts around 3 weeks same as cod liver oil i wont feed him haylage only hay

My 16.1hh TB mare has haylage included in the livery, so I only have the hard feed to find. She is on Allen and Page Fast Fibre (until she goes off it again) and a bag seems to last forever as she isn't a big eater - she eats loads of haylage, but isn't keen on feed. She gets magox, brewers yeast and micronised linseed added. I reckon it costs me about £3 per week altogether, if not less.

Mines on:

Fast fibre 250g dry weight
Linseed 100g
Vitamin

In total it costs me about £12.50 per month (about £3 per week), thats both summer and winter :D

Shes a cob and can live of fresh air so im lucky....

Ok! I think I may win this one ...

17 to feed! The natives get 1/2sc of Happy Hoof, 1/4sc flaked barley and 1/4sc of speedibeat a day. The TB's and the young gangly Welsh D Colt get Alfa A. THe Welsh and 1 TB get a scoop of Afla A, 1/2sc of Topline Cubes, 1/2sc speedibeat and a balancer twice a day. 1 of the TB's gets a scoop of Alfa A, a scoop of TopSpec Flakes, 1/2sc of speedibeat and a balancer twice a day. THe other 2 tb's get a scoop and a half of Alfa A, half a scoop of flaked barley and a balancer once a day as they are in a big field full of grass and need nothing more just yet. I'm trying to keep the weight on them just now as they will be staying out all winter.

Because I have no grass at home and have 2 TB's on box rest I get trough quite a lot of hay a month.

So final tally - ready to faint? In 1 week - £80 hay, £80-85 on food. So about £160 a week ... Bloomin good job they live at home and not on livery!!!

Haylage is part of the livery (DIY) costs for my two so only have to get hard feed. They just get Spillers Original Balancer to ensure theyre getting what they need and that usually lasts about a month or so, so about £25 a month/ 6 weeks. :)

WOW

I'm lucky, mine are out 24/7 at the moment with good grass. I only feed because shes muzzled to get her vits in. In the winter she has about 8kg of haylage a night (good stuff) and the price is mixed in with her livery....

My feed costs weren't too bad until OH got himself a horse. He is a big lad at 17.1hh and came to us a couple of months ago in rather lean condition so we have been feeding and fittening him up ready for hunting. He is hacked for one or two hours a day, plus doing hunter trials, rallies, etc. and gets through 5kg of own-brand conditioning cubes a day!

Daughter's horse is 16hh and competes or hunts at least once a week, plus rallies, lessons, hacking, schooling etc. He is on Spiller's Response Slow Release Energy Cubes at the rate of 2.4kg a day, plus extra oil.

Thankfully the pony is a good doer and gets a literal handful of cubes or an apple at feed times.

Total cost of hard feed and oil for all three is £4 a day or £28 a week.

However, as we have only a small acreage and not a lot of grazing, I do feed a lot of haylage and go through 3 x 300kg bales a month at a cost of £45 a bale so about £30 a week on haylage.

Haylage £5 a week from the YO (1 HUGE net a night). Balancer £15 which lasts approx 40 days so £2.60 ish a week and chaff £5 a bag which lasts approx 2 months so only around £1 a week...so all in all very cheap at around £9 a week for a 15.1hh heavy cob.

Ahh forgot supplements!!! Lol!! Rosehip for his joints is around £2.50 a week and his Milk Thistle which is £2.50 a week to so £14 in total..still not bad..I do think I get a VERY good deal on my haylage!!!
