The dangers of Shetland ponies!

I posted a little while ago about the ancient Shetland pony that had landed in our laps. He's coming on really well and last Sunday he was due out of isolation and into a paddock to start meeting his new buddies. So I took him out of his box and he got a little excited. Poor soul has been in quarantine for 3 weeks and he was desperate to have some friends. So he puts his head between his knees and trots off. While trying to steady him up I ended up behind him, he got a fright and we ended up tangled up, I fell forward and to the left while his little foot kept my foot still. One twisted ankle and lots of swearing.......so I thought. Took my boot off that night and ankle exploded up so went to a&e and it seems I've ripped the ligaments in my ankle and have badly strained my Achilles tendon. I've got a cast on!! Because of the tendon damage the cast is to ensure the tendon gets a real rest. I'm furious because my youngster was due to make his showing debut on the 9th of April and my hospital review isn't until the 4th.
So the moral of the story is.....even 30yr old Shetlands can hurt! Little s**t but I love him really!!
 
ouch!! poor you! what a devil..:eek: i do have one sounding very similar.. :rolleyes: moral of my scary story .. lets just say bad things happened to.. leave him in the field!!.. he survived this winter so has many years to go!!!:rolleyes::D
 
LOL but sympathy too!

If my 28 year old shettie gets it into her mind that she is going over there with or without you NOTHING can stop her! Low centre of gravity!
 
Seriously some people just shouldnt own shetlands........THEY WILL TRY TO KILL YOU!!!!!!:eek::D

Ive got yearling filly she has been more of a madam than any tb ive had and finds strength in her frame that can drag a bulky farmer off his feet;)
But wouldnt be without her now:)
 
We have a little american mini from South West Equine Protection - we're the ones that need protecting - from him!!! He's called beau jangles AKA ' rear of the year Lol!!
 
I've tried to walk a miniature donkey and a miniature horse before...that was interesting! One was trying to pull towards the grass and the other was trotting & broncing in place while I was in the middle!
 
This is why I stick to British miniature spotted ponies! They are little, cute, fluffy and come without the attitude, (plus spots too!) I have five mini spots and one mini Shetland gelding who has more attitude than all the rest put together, most people assume he's the stallion when I say I have one!

Op I hope your ankle heals well so you are not lame for the trot up!
 
Ouch. What a little monkey. You've gotta love shetties havn't you. I've looked after a fair few over the years and they're little horrors arn't they. :p
I hope your foot is better soon.
 
Shetland ponies are the work of the devil, ours is wild and finds it particularly funny to rush past unsuspecting people when they are leading her and kicking them in the knees :D
 
Poor you, shetlands really should come with a health warning.! We had a mini for several years, which in the summer lived free range on the drive and the lawns up to the house (sounds posh dont it!!) One day my OH was taking the wagon out to put deisel in (doing me a massive favour as I was washing ponies) and Fullah (the shettie) was doing his lawnmower impression towards the bottom of the drive. He wasnt scared of the wagon at all but as OH got near to him he walked in front of the wagon. So out OH gets to grab a handful of plentiful mane and escort Fullah down the side of the wagon so he could open the gate and get out. No Chance reckons Fullah! Once OH takes a firm hold of a lump of Fullah's plentiful mane, it takes off at the gallop, trips OH up who refuses to let go of mane and drags OH off his feet, he lands on his knees and knuckles, skiing up the drive!! We cruel lot (daughters and wife) were creased up wetting ourselves with laughter at the sight we were unlikely never to see repeated. Oh how I wished I had had a phone camera back then it was worth £250 quid of anyones money for "Youve been framed"
 
Ouch! Hope you heal quickly! Little sod. Because they are so cute, they think they can get away with it :D Have you got any photos of the little man in question? :)
 
I have a black 9 year old shetland mare who is as good as gold she does lead rein, jumps, 1st ridden and mothers all the youngsters but 2 years ago I was lunging her when she took off and pulled me over breaking my elbow the doctor at the hospital said "you girls are always falling off horses its such a dangerous sport!" I didnt have the heart to own up that a 40 inch shettie was the culprit.
