the dead ones are the lucky ones :(

We know China has a terrible record for animal cruelty, yet most of our horse rugs are made there. We should campaign to buy British.

I have to say, I completely agree. I'm distraught for these poor horses, and the countless other ones destined for the same fate.
Look at them, they're skin and bones.

I cannot write what I want to write, I would be banned for life. There is nothing more cruel than the human race and nothing more cruel than what the human race does to defenceless animals. Poor poor horses.

Yet another comment I agree with. Usually I feel sorry for the horses involved in other accidents posted on here and facebook but this one makes me feel terrible. Poor horses.

Not looking, have seen best and worst of humanity already this week :( Cannot manage any more human awfulness. Our species does not deserve to live on this planet.

Afraid this sort of thing going on in all parts of the world, and thank you for posting this and will agree with others here to boycott these countries, yes most of the leading brand rugs and other equine products are manufactured in China along with human clothing etc, but while we want a cheap disposable product this sort of thing will carry on (but you try and buy made in Britain products), I bought some very cheap leading brand rugs recently (and admit not British) and was told they were so cheap because they were last years colours! For god sake they were turnout rugs which would be covered in **** after two mins of turning out! I am old fashioned and will buy British where I can but sometimes difficult, and also will buy quality over what colour or bling effect they have.

Oh my God this breaks my heart. The poor horses are so traumatised and just stand patiently to get reloaded and continue their last journey. The poor dun lying down obviously cant get up and no doubt was heaved into the lorry to continue.
It would kill me to think any of mine ended up in that situation.
At least their suffering is probably over by now.

Those poor horses :( the poor things are waiting so patiently too, shows just how incredibly willing the specie is. I hope the six that got away dont get found...

Having read what you have all posted i cant bring myself to have a look. It makes me tearfull and feel sick.

People keeping sharing images of animal cruelty on Faceache with me, they are not condoning it but wanting to make people aware. I wish they would stop sharing because i know some of what goes on and it makes me sick to the stomach that this misery is being caused by human beings, but looking at it makes me really sad and i will have those images in my head for ages.

I dont really understand what this has to do with animal cruelty.... This was an RTA, not cruelty
Surely the fact that 2 horses were killed in similar accidents in the UK just a week or so ago makes this point?!

This is heartbreaking, those poor horses. Why oh why cant animals be treated with dignity and care, even if they are to end up as food, does not mean those poor trusting and helpless animals should ever be treated in such a way, they must have been crammed on that lorry, no need for the live transport of so many who are destined for death at the end, makes me sick :(

Lorries transporting horses crash in other countries too; what makes this so especially awful? Where does it say that the ponies are going to slaughter? (horses are also slaughtered in this country....), and these ponies are not especially thin, abused looking or obviously injured, they just look wet and a bit shocked. Don't understand all the hand wringing really.

Have you ever been there?
There is a huge media hype but whenever I go and visit my brother, I see only well cared for, well loved pets, including at the local riding centre

No I would never go to China unfortunately, but having a number of relatives who've spent most of their lives there I do know it's an incredibly beautiful country in parts.

THIS!
It's a horrific accident and utterly heartbreaking....

however as Cortez says it could have happened anywhere! I'm sure I remember a bad crash in Europe somewhere and loads of draft horses died.
I know a few chinese people and they're lovely and care for their pets really well. My ex sister-in-law went and she said she didn't see any animal cruelty at all. This isn't the first time China has been talked about like this on this forum, I really don't like the generalisation. It's like saying Americans are nasty because of the Big Lick!

Again, poor horses :( R.I.P

If you can view the pictures of those 60 horses crammed into that lorry and consider it humane or ethical I would be shocked. Surely any true horseman or woman cannot condone how those horses were being treated. The pictures say it all.

This looks like a double decker lorry to me, who can say if it was crowded or not? Cattle trucks carry similar numbers routinely.
The horses, as stated above, look in good condition and were off to market, not slaughter

I'm not condoning it, just pointing out that it happens in other places too, and often the horses are in worse condition.

Horses are not cattle and double decker trucks/trailers are totally unsuitable to travel horses in which is why many civilized countries in the world have banned them. 60 horses, you don't think that's crowded?

Horrid story yet, as others said, this was an RTA and nothing more really. IF there were 60 horses on board then, if only 5 (was it 5?) died then actually, given the fact the lorry overturned, then actually that is not so horrific on some aspects. The horses on the pictures do not look in horrendous condition by any means. Its I raining and yes the horses are clearly and understandably in shock and scared as you would expect them to be.

There have been plenty of posts on here about tragic accidents on UK roads with horseboxes/trailers and really this is no different. I am no fan of China and their human rights ( or lack of) and indeed their appalling treatment and disregard for animals in some parts (ie the of skinning dogs live for their coats etc). However, this looks to be just an accident.
