...At the yard last night.

The squealing was awful :( & the worst thing is they didnt finish the poor thing off.

I sent OH off with a shovel. He thinks I'm a bit pathetic now...

:(

My friend's Weimy caught a mixy rabbit in the indoor school once, she said that's the only reason he managed to catch it. Another friend dispatched it though, the dog hadn't hurt it.

My JRT Jim caught one but it was too big for him to dispatch quickly him self so mum shooed him off and nudged bunny under a hedge with her foot.

You're not pathetic

The first couple of rabbits Evie caught she didn't finish off straight away, I was too much of a coward to dispatch it. Don't know if others have found the same but my dogs never eat mixy rabbits, just kill them and leave them, yet healthy ones they devour. (Well healthy till the dog got them:p).

Mine have, and 2 of them where having a tug a war:( I ran as fast as I could "hoy" leave it, it was in a right state, OH stretched its neck, Im not sure I could, I would be more likely to take it home/work and dispatch of it that way, but its far kinder, esp in the state that one was in to let it go asap.

My OH takes me rabbiting all the time (well in the winter) and I still find it horrific, i cover my ears when i hear the dogs on the rabbit and then walk away when my OH rings its neck and guts it...horrifies me!
I know i shouldnt go but to watch the dogs work is truely amazing and i love that bit...its just the rest!

Yeah, Even without the dogs efforts it was in a pretty poor way...
I'm certainly not brave enough to 'dispatch' even though i know its the right thing. Luckily OH stepped up, but he didnt look very pleased with himself afterwards. Its never nice :(

Tysie however was VERY pleased with himself for catching said wabbit. Ofcourse, if it didnt have mixy he wouldnt even have got close... But we wont tell him that :)

Poor you! I don't think I could dispatch one myself either. My dog, a lurcher has caught one rabbit. Embarrassingly she was on the extender lead at the time, just sniffing in the long grass at the side of the track. Heard this little yelp, then saw Georgie with little rabbit in her mouth. She did kill it immediately at least. She hasn't caught any more since, but I don't walk her in heavily rabbit populated areas - can't risk the bloodshed!!

What sort of dogs have you got?

My little girl is half patterdale, and thus kills them instantly

Ones a GSD x Husky and the other is some sort of mix of American Bulldog X Boxer, or something to that extent. We're not too sure.
Tyson just seemed to think it was the best toy ever and held it very gently in his mouthwhile he legged it around!

My dogs have caught (and eaten if I don't get to thjem quick enough!) a fair few rabbits. They generally do kill them pretty quickly so that at leats means I am not left having to 'finish it' as I don't think I could. The cat is the worst though, he catches them and brings them back to 'play' with. i have rescued a couple from him but am never quite sure if they are damaged or not. I guess the red kites/crows would finish them off though if i didn't or, knowing rabbits they'd just die of shock anyway!

How lovely of your dog!!

I think i'm hardened to the whole 'killing' cute creatures! Think it comes from being a Gamekeepers/Farmers daughter!

I will quite happily bump things on the head - rabbit, adult or day old pheasant etc. Have also disposed of a deer before (it was an emergency and it was in a mess so i had to) but that wasn't too pleasant i must say.

Tessie's caught a few mixy rabbits (and healthy ones, when she was younger) and because she's got such a weak jaw the best she could do was break the back of one (she jumped on it). Dad dispatched the most but I was the one who had to deal with the broken back and I didn't have a spade. Popped it's neck and then immediatly brought my lunch up in the bushes. You're not pathetic, it's not a nice thing to do even when you're used to it :(

Edited just to say that I really wish I had a spade with me :/

I am petrified of Betsy catching a rabbit. The yard / farm is riddled with mixi rabbits atm and so is my parents garden so I am constantly on guard!
One of the dogs at the yard caught one a couple of weeks ago and I had to go find it and give it a bash :(

I really hate doing it, with hands or a spade but I cant leave them to die slowly.

My dad taught me how to do it when I was 9 (Yes he is a crude man and doesnt understand little girls very well!) and told me it was important to kill any infected rabbit you see.... EVERY rabbit I see has mixi at the moment!!

OH would be useless if B caught a bunny, he was veggy for 8 years and think im cruel for digging a horse in the ribs when they decide to flatten me! He would proably try to save it!

our German Pointer catches them and then the Doberman despatches them!!

very efficient team :) they are also good with rats but i have to call them sharpish if a cat appears on the horizon.
