I'm not that dumb - my involvement in Ivans drive training is purely observational, from a safe distance. I have to look after him, so I have no intention of annoying him in the arena, and risking the revenge!

That's exactly what it is. Sweetness and light until he decides it's time to stop, then realises he doesn't get to dictate duration and intensity of session!
