.... and says he has the worst teeth he has ever seen.

The front upper teeth have never erupted properly, all the teeth have grossly uneven wear, and in his opinion, it is purely down to neglect.

It is going to be a massive job, requiring him, his colleague, and a vet present for sedation.

He also said, that with his teeth in their current state, had he been left another year, he doubts very much he would still be alive.

I feel so angry, yet sad at the same time...

ah bless him, I have just read your blog and it truly is a sorry tale, but he looks so much better already. Its amazing what TLC can acheive. Good luck with the dentist, I know you must be so angry but what an amazing thing you are doing for him.

Snowy is a very lucky horse to have found you, I'm not surprised you are angry and sad at such neglect. Hope the dental treatment goes well.

Just read your blog and can't believe the state poor Snowy was in. Where did you get him from? People who neglect horses to that extent should be shot. I'm so pleased that he has gone to someone who is prepared to treat him properly and give him a chance. You and Snowy deserve for him to get fully well and for him to have a long, happy and fulfilling life, whatever he is able to do. My best wishes to you both.

Hi Dubs x You now know what you are dealing with which can only be good news for your and for Snowy. When the work has been carried out you will start to see a steady difference in him.

On a really positive note you can now move forward and it can only get BETTER

I'm wondering how long it's going to take him to recover though...

It's a possibility that they might be able to help the front teeth by cutting into the gums, so I'm concerned that, being so thin, this could set him back with his eating.

The EDT is having a long chat with his colleague tomorrow, and will then phone back with a more definite plan of action, so I'll discuss it with him then I suppose.

Poor Snowy, he really has been picked up in the nick of time hasnt he.

I actually feel quite guilty, as we were offered him before Christmas, but I said no, as we don't have stables, and I felt he would fare better, kept in.

As it turns out, he stresses in a stable anyway, so has spent the majority of winter outside.
If I'd have taken him earlier, his teeth would have been sorted by now, and he would probably be more or less up to weight.

Ho hum, you make a decision, and you live with it...

Dont feel bad Dubs, you made that decision for all the right reasons and are putting in a heck of a lot more time and expense than most other mortals would.

Hugs.

All I can say is..thank god snowy has ended up in the safe hands of you:) That has actually brought a tear to my eye to think of what would happen had he been left any longer. I think things will probably look worse before they start to look better but I'm sure you willl start to turn the corner soon. I know he will know have the best possible chances given to him

Yup, it was always a double edged sword anyway really.
Had I taken him in winter, and had his teeth done back then, it would have been a much harder task to try and get some weight on him. At least the weather is milder, so the food he has isn't being utilised soley to keep him warm...

On the issue of expense, I would like to advise anybody thinking of doing anything like this, to think seriously about it. Snowy will no doubt end up costing us several times more than he is worth, and it can also be very stressful - I was close to tears when the EDT gave his verdict.

On a brighter note, he didn't charge us for today, and is negotiating a substantial discount on the cost of the treatment.

Excellent about the discount though!

I know! I was really quite choked by the kindness he showed. He's trying to work it so that I pay a flat fee of £50.

Oh the poor poor boy

Thank goodness he came to you in time. Terrible for the lovely old boy, but I'm sure under your care there is plenty of hope for him yet. H. x
