Fleas being the F word - just got back from a lovely walk in our local park and bumped into a super lady who I have chatted to a few times and have always loved our doggy horsey chats. She is of more advanced years than me and totters around the woods on her sticks and manages her rather lovely collie cross at the same time and must be upwards of 70. Lovely character.
Anyway today my dog was itching and I started to bemoan the price of flea treatment to which she said that she never uses it !! Everyday she gets a cup of boiling water and goes through her dogs coat with her fingers removing anything she finds and then cracks it popping the flea into the hot water to finish it off. My mouth must have dropped open but she went on to explain that she very rarely gets anything off the coat and that her dog loves the interaction. She also checks for ticks and lumps and bumps at the same time. She said that she accepts the odd flea as part of dog ownership and that she doesn't treat her house except she hoovers thoroughly every day . ( I wish she would do mine...)
Apparently she has cats as well and the reason behind this routine was 10 or so years ago she lost her beloved cat when he had a reaction to a flea treatment. I said surely you must do the cats but she does all 4 of her cats everyday with a fine flea comb giving them a thorough groom. They love it and all line up to be done and again anything she finds she treats the same way...
I dont know what I think of this but I suppose 30 or so years ago was this the way we defleaed??
Would love your thoughts...
