and the river is so high I can't get my horse across it!!!! The river is usually about fetlock deep and he splashes across from his field quite happily but today it is up to the top of my legs - I had trouble getting him across the other day when turning him out at night when it was knee high - he only decided he would when I started leading him back to his stable

so I can't see him agreeing to cross TO his stable at the momment. I am hoping the level will go down as the farrier is not coming until midday, but will he mind doing him if his legs are soaked? I can bring some towels from home to try and dry them - what else should I do?

This has been suggested to me but he wouldn't let me ride him across it when it was fetlock high - he wants me to go in first and check its safe! I was thinking of taking the kids with me as there is a footbridge - I could cross by this and leave a child the other side with a bucket of food - they might be able to entice him across with the bucket if I gently wave a lunge whip behind him - OR I am going to take my shorts and accept that my wellies will be filled up with water again.

I will tell the farrier that he should be grateful for clean but wet legs

Farrier's are not usually happy to shoe if the hooves are very wet as it softens the horn and A, makes it painful for the horse when burning the shoe on as the horse can feel it a lot more! and B, the clenches tighten around the nails after the hoof has dried out which can cause slight nail bind if the drying out process raises the nails a little high if that makes sense. Hope this helps

Cancel your appointment until it is SAFE to bring your horse across the river.

It is safe - its just deeper than usual - the bottom is a good solid one used for taking vehicles across. The farrier is coming to the yard to do other people's horses, including the shetland we have on loan so he will be coming any way - I'm off to see if I can get him in now so he can stand in for a couple of hours and I can come home and dry off again.
