Does anyone know how likely it is that 4x4 road tax will be increased to an extortionate amount, and would it be likely to be across the board or could they just tax 'non essential Chelsea Tractors'. I have a very old one which I only have because of the need to tow. It's not worth much and would not want to get stuck paying more in road tax than it's worth, although I see no practical alternative.
Do I need to worry?!

Right now, any vehicle pre- 1973 does not require road tax payment. What the future holds? Who knows?

i don't think it will be 4x4s they hit hard. just big gas guzling vehicles. they make 4x4 cars with small engines so how could that damage the enviroment. they just say 4x4s as examples. i know a vet who has a subaru justy, it is 4x4 but is only 1200 cc. i can't see how they could police it, it wouldn't be fair.for example if you had a big 4.6 litre range rover and took the front prop off.it would then not be a 4x4. so would it be exempt? i think the government have some work to do. I'm all in favour of looking after the enviroment but some people do need big 4x4s to tow legitamately. not just to look flash and take the kids to school. whats wrong with walking or a small car.

Exactly i swaped my freelander for a KA to help the enviroment and moved my horse opposite bold heath equestrian centre so i could walk across to the show centre. We all know the uk goverment hits the car user hard in this country..so i sold my 4x4 when i could still get a good price for it i was not going to risk loosing half its value overnight...rough sort of figures in the times a few weeks ago said the tax could be as much as £1,800 for 12 months road tax for a 4x4

I've just opted out of our company car programme due to the excess charges I pay on my tax. To put it simply I can have 2 horses on livery for the excess I pay. You might try looking at a commercial vechicle some of the Vauxhall and Ford ranges can tow a double trailer (some have got over 2L engines in them) they have better fuel economy, taxes, repairs I could go on but from where my money goes my horse is now free for running costs based on this...

I never voted them in in the first place.....find it difficult to understand anyone who did, to be honest.

I read an article saying that the older 4x4's were not going to have the increased tax because people with older 4x4's generally use them for what they are intended to do and those people tend to be poorer! lol! I hop it's true. I had to get rid of my "road car" and buy a 4x4 because I was butchering it driving off road which I have to do because of my job. Not because I wanted to ponce around!
