My gelding started making the noise a couple of days ago, and I'd always been told that when they did it was time to clean his nether regions. So yesterday I gave then a really good clean, got on this morning to do some schooling, started trotting and the noise is louder than ever! Which has made me wonder maybe the noise is caused by something else? Does Anyone know?

tension can cause it.

i agree with this, mine only does it when he's sort of holding his breath so physically I think it's a combination of the empty bits where his boy bits were and stomach muscles. He'll do it past something spooky then stop or do it if I ask him something tough in the school.

Were you doing something different with your boy?

I wouldn't worry, I get stressed (before important meeting, before going xc etc.) but it doesn't do me ant harm. If you've ask him to do something tricky and he gets a little stressed for a short time while he works it out - IMHO I don't think that's an issue at all. Just useful for you to know when he's feeling the pressure so you can tweak what you're asking accordingly maybe.

Hmm that's interesting! All I can think is I havnt schooled in a while, not properly anyway due to the heat we've had, and just been hacking, maybe that's why :)

My boy does it when he is tense. If we are having an argument about something in the school or I'm pushing him a bit too hard, when he starts doing the noise I know I'm probably asking a bit too much of him. I let him have a stretch for a minute then we pick up and try again. 9 times out of 10 that's all it takes and we are able to get on with what I've been asking... rude noise-less ;)

Hmmm.... I'd noticed that my gedling had started doing this from time and to time and like others thought it was hygiene related (though it "looks" clean). So I've learned something new today....along with the horrifying fact that a horse will swim pretty much in a straight line when out of his depth because he can't turn and horses drown doing this!

I always thought it was air up their sheath I dont do cleaning male bits beyond a quick hose from time to time and mine has never made a noise

My boy makes that sound when he gets a bit tense. His bits are generally sparkly clean as it gets a rinse quite regularly!
