I bought G about 5 years ago in order to event, but what with injuries for both of us and my overall general incompetence, we haven't yet managed one. Until this morning that is! I've only actually managed one hunter trial on him, about a year ago, and I fell off at fence 3 :eek3:

We went to Borde Hill to do their UA 80. I walked the course yesterday and was absolutely terrified, the fences appeared huge to me, I'm sure some of them were 90. At this point I'm thinking I'm definitely going to substitute my friend/rider/trainer in for me, especially as I've been rather poorly all week and hardly eaten for a few days. At least that meant there wasn't any food in me for the nerves to get rid of :o :biggrin3: I gave f/r/t instructions to bring her competition gear with her just in case!

We set off super early and arrived at Borde Hill at 7:30 which meant we had prime parking right next to the sj and the food :wink3: saw my other friend off to the dressage on her horse, then got G ready and set off. At this point it's too late to sub f/r/t in for me, but I'm thinking just of the dressage. Warmed up nicely until G saw his mate just leaving, when he started being nappy and trying out for a bit of rodeo. Calmed him down, went in for dressage and he went really nicely, I focused on each and every stride and came out grinning :D :D

Quick change for sj and saw my travelling buddy do her round before getting on. F/r/t gave me a pep talk, and sorted the fences out for my warm up, then I went in. It wasn't the most stylish round, and I didn't have enough energy going uphill to fence 4 so he knocked it with his back feet, but other than that it was a super round and gave me lots of confidence.

Changed for xc and the nerves really started kicking in, I thought I was going to be sick and wanted to withdraw. Well there was no way that f/r/t was going to allow that, so we headed for the warm up. When there were 6 to go before me, I had a trot and canter round and popped the warmup fences. Well he was awesome, really took me into them, flew them, so then waited until our time to go. Came out of the start box, get to fence 1 almost immediately and I didn't give him a slap down the shoulder so the bu88er stopped. Came round again and exactly the same thing, but the third time I meant it. Fence 2 and stopped again but we were allowed 4 stops before the big E so I carried on and rode rode rode fences 3 and 4 which were 2 nice houses then fence 5 I was worried about, a large brush downhill on an angle, so a damn good slap and over that, quick dog leg to the pheasant feeder at 6, then into the woods for a big log pile at 7, kicked on and cleared that. Back to trot for the drop at 8 then a nice line to the chair at 9, surrounded by trees but the git managed to run out. I came round again and he stopped, went to try a third time but the whistles blew and the red flag came out so I'm afraid it was the walk of shame!

Ready to set off for xc (feeling sick)

And the evil fence (I think chairs might end up being my bogey fence)

I am chuffed to bits with the day although cross with myself for not riding those first 2 fences, and I need to get some practice in on the chairs as I fell off at one a couple of weeks ago, and I know it was my hesitation that made him stop. However the fences we did that I thought were big, rode really well, and I DIDN'T FALL OFF

Thanks for reading!

Well done and extra well done for no falling off. SJ looked good, more practice with the CX. I am always impressed in your have a go attitude, I am such a chicken.

Hobo I've seen some of your photos, you were a fab xc rider, and if you really want to do it again, you will. F/r/t kept saying to me before the xc "remember this is what you want to do".

Now got my dressage through too

Looking good JB! You know what you need to do so now it's just a case of doing it :) On a positive note the XC fences you rode, rode really well so it's just a question of confidence now. Perhaps you should just hire an XC course and practice your bogey fences to the point of boredom?

JB, well done you for getting out there and doing it. And now you know you can do it, next time will be easier.

Dressage with a smile - better than I ever manage.

IMHO, you can definitely count today as a success

a) you didn't part company from your steed
b) you went out there and rode all three phases (as far as you could)
c) you know what needs refining

Oh, and the weather was good too

:) :)

Well done JB, you are far braver than me. I never leave the ground unless I'm flying through the air as part of some form of spectacular dismount so you have my admiration for taking part.

Lovely reading your report as usual and I'm glad you are feeling much better today.

Well done! :D

Shame about the stops but you've got your first ODE under your belt now and you know what went wrong at the first few fences XC - that's half the battle right there. Onwards and upwards... :)

That's sort of what I've been doing the last few weeks, been trying to get out xc every week hut it does get rather expensive.

Fantastic day JB, you should be really proud of yourself and G for what you achieved, well done. Xx

Thanks, I am :)

JB, well done for NOT falling off :D
Very well done for dressage with a grin, completing sj and then tackling xc, big pat for G too for not putting you into scenery :)

Thank you, yes G got lots of pats even though we had the walk of shame lol.

Thank you, yes the weather was an extra bonus!

Thanks, and once DP gets going you might fancy a jump!

Thanks yes definitely onwards and upwards, planning the rest of the season now *bouncy bouncy*

Really well done and good that you're cross with yourself - that means you'll do it again!

Haha yes it probably does mean that

Massive well done! I did almost the same yesterday, but in the 70cm. Same SJ down but didn't get anywhere near as far on the XC as you did, so well done for cracking on with it!!! You were there, taking part and took on all three so well done!

Well done for getting out there and doing it :)!
Would it be worth making a portable chair to put out in your school at home and jump as often as you need to?

Very well done indeed lass!

As others have said, first ODE under your belt, so now you know what you're doing and what you need to keep doing, and you'll do it grand :)

Thanks MrsM!

I think the 70 was tougher than the 80, not as big obviously, but more skinny and scary fences. The one in the woods after the hay cart was just mean.

Well done for getting out there and doing it :)!

Thing is, DF, he'll jump anything at home, it's almost pointless training there now as he'll take it on. He's not even worried about anything when we're out but if I don't give him 100% green lights he'll be a cheeky sod. Yesterday gave me huge confidence to kick on as we jumped some bigger fences than I thought I was capable of, so next time I'll be stronger.

Another gratuitous xc pic just because I love it!

So so pleaded for you. Haven't seen the vids yet but wanted to add my congrats! You've come on so far and that is an amazing achievement. I reckon you'll come out all guns blazing next time and it sounds like a really good start, and you've learned lots to apply next time. And you did it, you conquered your demons, that's no mean feat!

Looking great. You must be so chuffed with that. :D

I am :D thanks

Well done JB, I am glad you have made so much progress especially as you have been feeling so poorly.
Some great pictures.

Thank you and for all your support x

Thanks Bernster, I know you understand the fears I get, but when we get past them we have a ball!

Don't let chairs become an issue in your mind! :) From your picture above I bet you it wasn't the chair per se that was the problem, rather where/how it was sited and the light/dark/shadows. Even if there was a straightforward log on the ground there I bet a lot/most horses would have had a gawp due the light patterns.

Well done and on to the next! :)

Thanks GGD. I can almost guarantee the problem was me though rather than the horse, although he's cheeky, when he's given the green lights, he's a machine. F/r/t always says he's a big baby, he needs his hand held over everything: if you're there for him, he will fly it. He spent 4 years with the Kent and Surrey Bloods, and I don't think there's much they don't jump!

Next one is September as I'm going away next week for a couple of weeks.

Excellent report and well done! Onwards and upwards. Glad you jumped the chair and didn't fall off. Keep up the good work. I hope you are really pleased because that is a great achievement, to get round and still have a smile on your face despite the nerves!

:)
