Anyone watch the Hoof GP? I find it interesting how different trimming is for cows. Do cow hoof trimmers have to be qualified like a farrier? Is trimming cows feet a new thing? Some of the poor things have nasty feet.

I think cows that spend a lot of time indoors need more hoof attention.

I do enjoy watching his videos. Very interesting.

Yes I watch him and Nate the hoof guy on TikTok. It’s quite soothing as well as interesting to watch them pare back the “claws”. I’ve learnt a lot about digital dermatitis and the use of salicylic acid wraps 🤣.

When the neighbouring farm bring the cows in for milking there are always a few hobbling along painfully at the back.

My barefoot trimmer uses a grinder on nearly all her clients. One of mine won't have it but the others are fine.

She's very careful, I do think it could go wrong quite quickly.

It's probably the coming thing, like the way the dentists all use motorised tools now.

I use a grinder to trim my horses. Far easier on the trimmer and on the horse.

Watching cows feet trimming videos is also my favourite pastime.

Same near here! Just a few weeks ago, I took a photo of a cow in a field with one foot well and truly stuck into a section of plastic piping, an "elbow" section that just covered foot and fetlock, and posted it onto our local facebook page.
One dairy herd was owned by a local vet and I thought it was shameful how many lame cows he had.

Hoof GP drinking game - every time digital dermatitis gets mentioned..... 🥴

Check out Enoch The Cow Vet. Rectal prolapse repair, using poly pipe and fencing wire 😳 Great results with that fix! Also, lots of abscess draining and the postmortems are really interesting.

Yes! Love a puss filled cow hoof! I also watch a lady shearer who deals with a lot of overgrown sheep and alpacas/llamas.

I wonder how many farriers dream of using a crush and an automatic leg holder!

I also watch his reels. Shocking how often there are screws etc in the poor cows hooves.
I wonder who discovered you could use a grinder on hooves, but not for horses?

I'm not sure many horses would ever trust us again if they were put in one of those crushes. You *could* use a grinder on horses but there's a lot that could go wrong if the horse objected and we don't leave them for long enough in most cases for it to be necessary.

I know some trimmers and other horse owners that use grinders quite successfully. I've considered it for my horses hard as rock hooves.

It doesn't have to be a drastic trim or anything. You can use a grinder for small trims too.

Some horses honestly give zero f*cks about it. You can tell pretty quickly what they think about it/how they'll react.
