The horsemeat fiasco and why I don't like politicians

One day they say red meat is good for us, the next it's bad..
Then they say aspartame which is in all diet drinks, and artificial sugars is a danger to our health after years of supposedly being better for us than natural sugar (so serious, that in some people it can cause MS symptoms) http://aspartame.mercola.com/ .. I stopped believing the lies years ago.. it's all about money and control.
We're the Sheep and they're Wolves in Sheeps clothing...

Hi Tallyho!!!

I'm loving the horse jokes! As I said on another page, I think it's really separated those with a sense of humour and those without! Just think of how this has raised the profile of equestrianism on the back of the great pulicity following the Olympics!

We have taught the general public that not only can horses win gold medals, but that they are yummy too!

I'd be looking out for the price of those steaks reducing, and then I'd be buying them!!! I'm a little off ready meals right now, but a nice cut of steak I couldn't resist!!!!

:D

Hi Redmone!! Yes I agree!

And they taste just like beef!! Who'd a thought it eh? I always imagined they'd taste like chicken... Dunno why :D:D

Polos Mum - I couldn't agree with you more!

I love it how now we're going from "definately safe", to "unlikely to be dangerous"....in such a quiet swift movement!

I particularly liked this bit of the article...

"FSA chief executive accused some vets and horse owners of not ensuring horse passports are kept up-to-date, leading to bute-treated horses ending up in the food chain.

She said: "If both these people have done the right thing, horses with bute in don't make their way into the food chain. Someone has always broken the rules."

So you see, problem solved. It was our fault all along!

Silly me

Redmone, what article was this? I'm really upset that the FSA chief exec is trying to shift blame for this fiasco onto horse owners.
I'm going to send her a email saying that responsible owners have supported (and paid £20 per horse) for passports and that we would like to see the system run properly. With so many animals not passported, and vets and abbatoirs not abiding by the rules, and the ease of getting a new passport, the current system is a complete waste of time and money.

Hi digger66

I'm struggling to find the article as I'm in my tablet but it was on BBC website yesterday, I think it was the confirmation of bute found article....will keep looking and try to post link....

Here's one article - but not the exact one I copied and pasted the paragraph above from - unless it's been altered since

As I said, I knew it'd be our fault!

Daughter has just told me that a good way to avoid tasting horse meat in burgers is to cover it in cheese.

She recommends mascapone!!!!!!

Not heard that one before hahahahahahaha!! :D

And the lesson is... Why the hell are you eating ready meals?? Do you really expect top quality if you pay tuppence ha'penny for a ready meal?

I can only hope that this fiasco with an out of control food chain will benefit British farmers who have to adhere to strict welfare and traceability rules, so much so that home grown meat has been priced out of this market.

Learn to cook, buy local and you'll know what you're eating.

Loved the jokes btw!

Well maybe horses should be included under the "livestock" bracket.

Why do I think this? Well, there's no point hiding the fact that horses and ponies are being slaughtered for meat. It shouldn't be done as part of a criminal operation. Why hide it?

If horses were treated like cattle for beef they would actually get better welfare treatment and not be packed into crates headed for Romania arriving thirsty and half dead. They would not have so far to travel and be slaughtered more humanely than they are being slaughtered now.

The public have said that they have no problem with it as long as it was labelled and then they could make an informed decision.

There is no denying that the horse leisure market is saturated and horses are being sent to the meat an anyway so surely it can only be a good thing?

The passporting system is full of flaws... If it were treated like livestock then I believe the standards will be raised and this will have a positive effect on the awful situation we are in now with horses in this country.

If I choose to eat ready meals, that's up to me. I still expect them to contain what it says on the box, as is the legal requirement!!! I wouldn't expect top quality but I'd expect them to comply with health regulations!

And some ready meals are about a fiver! Not tuppence!!!

For what its worth I very rarely eat ready meals! And can cook well enough already, thank you! I'll never be Delia but I get by!

Glad you liked the jokes, shame the rest of your post was miserable when mine was meant tongue in cheek!

: )

Got to agree with you tally ho! I've always thought the passport system was flawed, I had to get a duplicate for Dolly, no one asked anything about drugs administered so surely even though she' had bute effectively her paper work said she was fit for human consumption??? I bet horses with attitude taste chewy!!!

Seriously anything that improves treatment of animals is good with me x

The shop next to mine is a butchers. His trade has increased unbelievably. Mind you, as he said to me today, " I'm obviously pleased but let's see how long it lasts, people have short memories sometimes. This could be a knee jerk reaction and they're back to the ready meals in a month or two when they're fed up of cooking properly"

I do hope that doesn't happen. There is only one way to stop this sort of disgusting abuse of rules and regulations, which clearly aren't being enforced. That is to put these greedy, fraudulent companies out of business. Don't buy their rubbish.

Redmone, I agree totally.
We should be able to trust that what it says on the label, is what it contains.

Trouble is we obviously can't.

I for one am not surprised one bit about all this. Making money is always more important than honestly providing a service or product these days.

As far as big companies are concerned There is no such thing as pride in your sevice and product anymore. Just profit profit profit profit and more profit.

Very true words ribbons. Soon they'll be no one but tescos to buy from. I heard an interview on TV the other day where a business minister said that unfortunately small businesses had to move with the times be competitive or close down. Yes, because this government are really supporting small businesses aren't they!!!

Its a damn shame and I do hope this saga helps butchers and the like. Goodness knows they've not had it easy.

Grrrr that makes me mad! The govt do not support small businesses at all in this country...

Big businesses tax dodge very efficiently and it's the small businesses that cough up. (Just think Starbucks, Amazon..)

I've boycotted Amazon (even though I really bloody liked them!!) and also Starbucks (oh I miss my hazelnut latte) but as a matter of principle... no!

Now, I've decided that the local veg man actually sells fruit cheaper than my local tesco's express (convenient) and even the butcher is a trek as it's in the next village/town it's worth it.

Also, I think we eat too much meat in the west so hopefully having to trek to butcher will also make me eat less meat.

How can contamination not be a risk to human health?

How can me not knowing what is actually in my food (and them not knowing what I might be allergic to!!) not be a risk to my health?

The comment annoyed me too. Luckily I dont eat beef because yes, Im intolerent to it!! Anything cow-related (ie. dairy / beef etc.) I shouldn't have. So thankfully I hope to have not eaten any horse which in itself is horrifying, I would HATE to think Id eaten horse. What Im saying is that contamination like this is bad as you say, what happens if beef had been in something I bought as pork? Well I'd be ill aftewards! So yeah Mr Policitician it is a problem!

tallyho! - Im sure Ive missed something but why boycott Amazon? I dont have much time to watch the news...!

tax avoidance!

MM... Exactly what waitrose did in reverse. Beef meatballs actually pork.

I have no problem eating any meat but if the wrong animal has been packaged up... What else has.
