Im only a horse, dear master, but my heart is warm and true.
And i'm ready to work my hardest, for the pleasure of pleasing you.
Good corn, and hap and water, are all that i wish to ask.
And a warm dry bed to rest on , when i finish my daily task.
Don't strike me in needless anger if i'm slow to understand,
but encourage my drooping spirits with a gentle voice and hand.
Finally, oh my master!
When my health and strength are gone,
when i'm getting old and feeble, and my long life's work is done,
don't sell me to cruel owners
to be to be slavend to my last breath,
but grant me the untold blessing
of a quick and painless death.
That as you have always found me a patient and loyal friend
the years of faithful service may be crowned by a peaceful end.
I plead in the name of the saviour,
who cares when sparrows fall
who was born in lonely stable
and knows and loves us all!@

A long time since I heard that one

The one used at HOYS always makes me cry--perhaps not a prayer but a celebration

Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy, or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle and strength by gentleness confined
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.
England's past has been borne on his back.
All our history is in his industry.
We are his heirs, he our inheritance.
Ladies and Gentlemen: The Horse!

Brings Back momories of the Saturday Matinee at HOYS many years ago when Raymond Brookes-Ward used to recite it Very Moving Stuff.

Now Feels like a Right Silly Old Fart.

Yep another silly old fart here, original poem and Ode always make me cry.
I think this should be given to all new owners and put on all tack room walls.

1. My life is likely to last 20 or more years, any separation from you will be painful for me (remember this before you take me home)

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial to my well being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long. Don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. (I only have you..)

5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when it is speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Remember before you hit me that I am powerful enough to hurt you, (but choose not to.)

8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. (perhaps I have a problem that you might not be aware of.)

9. Take care of me when I am old. (you too will be old one day.)

10. Go with me on the last journey. Never say 'I can't bear to watch' or 'let it happen in my absence' Everything is easier for me if you are there.....
