We like new games, and after we saw rhino's pictures of her having a crack at "tilting the ring", I thought I'd better set something up and have a go.

When the Danes do it, it looks like this:

We had to improvise a bit...

broom handles, jumps, string and some rings of cardboard :D

Just to prove we had some success:

What better thing to do on a hot summer's morning?! :D What's everyone else been up to in this fine weather?

Can you come and train my highland please??
Either that or a horse swap!
An going to show Pepper Fergs pics so he can see what proper highlands do :)

Oh heavens, I don't think you can call Fergs a proper highland - all we do is canter around playing games :D :D

I have vouchers for jousting and archery days there... I just need to find a convenient day and book :D :D They're awesome, their fb page is like alternative discipline porn :p

lol I obviously have you sussed :p

I have to say it all look tremendous fun. If only I were 10 or 15 years younger....... but if my Dales turns out to be a level headed dude I may give it a try

Either that or I'm very, very predictable ;)

Y'know what, I think Fergs accepts these things because we've always done them...

This is him doing mounted games as a 4 year old with a friend of mine:

We were jousting, playing with swords, doing MG etc as soon as I had basic control in all 3 paces - it makes school work a lot more fun and desensitised him to the idea of me waving stuff about pretty quickly!

The best tips my lovely Danish trainer gave were to be in 2 point, some of them were almost hanging off the side, but definitely not to sit deep in the saddle. You might also find it easier to hold the lance slightly further up (the first thing they all did was surreptitiously mark the correct point on the lance). Try and do it without a run up too - we had the length of 2 jumping poles to get them from halt to canter, to make it even more tricky :D

Wow..you have given me lots of ideas for fun things to try :D And I love your dog, who would like to join in, and the pony looking at the poles, sussing them out. I like to imagine it was a garden path thing, and he was practicing on his own.

Ha ha! Awesome! :D Love it in the video when you get it second time round and shout "gotcha!" made me giggle :D

I'm very vocal when we're playing games :D

Copycat :p

Although it would appear that you're better at it than me :mad::mad:

I may have selected better clips - one of the rings was on a longer bit of string and kept swinging in the breeze... I couldn't get it for the life of me!

I thought "choking up" would be cheating :p I'll have a try in 2-point and see how it goes - it did occur to me it might be easier, but I wasn't too keen on bashing my head!

Halt to canter is fiiiine, Fergs is used to that at indoor trecs - jump from a 2 stride run up? s-bend to canter corrider in about 3m? Sure

You sound really differwnt on video :p

I sound like a wally. I have no idea what the soundtrack on here is as I had the sound off when I put it together - oops!

Nah Fergs is used to having stuff thrown at him! :D

Very good! Now, all you need is the suit of armour....

Too awesome! I'm very, very envious!

You and your ponies are absolutely bonkers.... I love it though :D

Thanks... I think ;) :D

Looks amazing :D

Playing games is the new black ;)

I love Fergs, he's so game for everything :D

:D :D :D

Cortez, tou seriously have the coolest job in the world!

Seconded!!

Wolf would love to join in :D He tries to herd them when I'm loose schooling  Dae was grazing because he's a pig :D

That looks like great fun! I love the variety of stuff that you and Fergs do :D

There is a similar game in Spain - you have a piece of wood with a nail sticking out of the end (I'm pleased to say that there appear to be no health and safety checks and risk assessments at village ferias!!), and a roll of ribbon suspended up high. Riders have to canter past and try to grab some ribbon with the nail. Unfortunately I was on foot when I saw it but a couple of friends had a go - one of them even managed to get the ribbon!

I'm going jousting for my hen do in a few weeks, I can't wait :D

That sounds like fun... Though the risk of impaling myself on a nail, less so...

Lucky you! Have fun - what a cool hen do! :D

I love your updates.
It's great to see you've gotten your mojo back as well.

I can envision me trying this and Tilly pulling the lot down on top of us (or aiming for the ring herself). :D

Haha I did wonder if I'd lose my hand eye co-ordination and batter it with the lance till it fell on us

I love playing games like this - it's much more fun than "real" riding :D

Like it, allthough the setup doesn't look very stable. Mind it doesn't land on your head next time ;)

Nah it was fine, it wasn't even wobbling ;)

There are other setups for running at the ring that are a bit less precarious, I'll see if I've any pics of our quintain to post (there are other joust-related games too; the quintain shield, the Saracen's head - you've all seen the cauliflowers - , collectively known as the Béhourd and there are rules, scoring systems, etc. if anyone's interested). Weirdly enough Ring jousting is also the official State sport of Maryland in the US, they joust at polo mints with pins in the end of their lances 'tho.

I'm always interested in new games :D Not sure I could get a polo on a pin  Perhaps I'll have a crack at that one day!

Anything I can rig up with what I have (which is loads of random stuff), I will try! :D
