Happy New Year all
Know you will no doubt all be on the case anyway, but, imagine my surprise to wake up this morning to the government announcement appealing for all 4x4 drivers to get out and help our more ecologically sound, but snowbound neighbors in the current inclement weather.
I had to laugh a wry laugh for a couple of reasons:
firstly, do the government think we need to be asked to help people out?? we have been checking on our neighbours for days as I am sure you all have, and as I live spitting distance from our yard was first on the phone offering help to everyone who lived further away and might be stuck.
Secondly and more laugh inducing was the great irony that the lovely labour government have been taxing us to the hilt and indeed prevent us fromdriving the blessed 4x4's for years a obviously they are the devils work, killers, polluters, never mind they are essential to the lives of many who live outside the M25!!! and now, ooooohhhhh they have not had the foresight to grit roads and plan ahead and suddenly we need to be asked to help with these dastardly machines!!!!
oooooooohhhh they make me cross...and yes, I will be out helping but not because you have asked me to Gordon Brown, because we live in a rural community with strong values and where we help each other regardless of weather!!
Sorry, rant over! ;-)

I totally agree! Just like banning hunting then asking the hunts for help with the foot and mouth crisis. They have such a bare faced cheek dont they? They have done alot to spoil the countrysde and country living yet it was our local farmer who got the petrol tanker up the icy hill to the garage last week so everyone could still travel. The same people who needed the petrol will moan when the same tractor slows them down for 30 seconds at any other time!

Very true, I've got a 4x4 which my partner has been using for work as he works further away than I do, I tried to get to work yesterday but couldn't, I then couldn't get home either.
Luckily I was towed home by a very nice man in a Landrover, I was so grateful.
I saw a news report yesterday which featured 4x4 club members going out & rescuing stranded drivers; the ambulance service has also been using volunteer 4x4 drivers to take casualties to hospital.
I expect the government will still try to tax us off the road though.

Im hopeing we have a hung parliment ...just one question will there be enough rope???

well ladies and gents, I have written to the editor, and my local radio station as they are discussing this morning, I am jolly well thinking the more of us who actually make a noise about it maybe they might stop taxing us quite so much!!! who knows??!!x

Its too easy a target untill the wheels fully come off the climate change scam the enviro Mental lobby will keep banging on about "selfish people" in 4x4s and hold sway over taxing them

hhhmmmm and the greatest irony is us 4x4 owners are the least selfish and most community minded set of people I know (in general obviously!!)

I guess you live in a far more rural area than myself. Where I am the majority of 4x4 drivers are rude and can't park their big over-sized cars for which they have no real use for (until it snows lots!) The joys of living in urban areas I suppose!
But yes, I agree as to the rural 4x4 drivers, generally alot more friendlier and helpful.
