My mare has had a lump appear on the side of her neck. She is in no pain its the size of a golf ball and hard. I have had the vet out today and they dont know what it is. They have listed various things it could be but are not sure. Any one had seen anything like this before ?

Just a thought. My friend bought a horse that had a lump on its neck. When she had it vetted they took off a sample from it to see what it was and they decided it was a benign cyst. 6 months later it burst. In the centre was a black thorn. Needless to say it wasn't covered by insurance.

Someone on another forum had a horse with a lump on it's hindquarters. It to was hard. The vet cut into it, believing it to be a solidified heomotoma. It then was left open and getting infected until it was refered to Liverpool, where they discovered it was a giant cell tumour.
Don't want to scare you, but I would get a second opinion if I were you, to rule it out.
The person in question posts on Equine World, I'm sure you could find the posts if you look, the horse is called Star, and has made a great recovery.
