Y is it that mares think they have to be in charge and think they know it all??? my mare is really affectionate and loving but when shes in one of those moods shes bargy, argumentitive and stroppy.

On Sat i fed her in the field and then went to bring her in for grooming to go for a ride. Her little pony friend was in field next to her and i went to catch her (normally not a problem) and she started rearing at me! she does rear quite alot but never normally at me. so this went on for a bit and i just stood and watched her. then she had a roll and fell getting back up (just slipped -nothing hurt), then she did a bit more rearing and by this stage id had enough. so armed with lunging whip i made it into a free schooling session in the field

well she didnt like that and soon was trying to get back to me for a polo and cuddle!!! We had the best hack we've had in ages after that!!! lol

Any way what way's would you guys deal with this situation?? i can cope with normal rearing i.e. away from me but dont like the rearing at at me and feel very threatened. I need to nip it in the bud

An old saying, You can tell a gelding, you can ask a stallion, you have to suggest it to a mare, but intrested as to why you fed her in the field first before wanting to ride????

Your first sentence about mare? Think I've got her twin - very loving and sweet, but totally in charge (only of me - other people she behaves for).

Cliperty... i fed in field as my bedding and matts were up in stable as the floor was drying over night. but i have never had any problem riding straight from the field but it is only a small paddock with practicly no grazing?!
