Is it as bad as they say? Are people having to drop their prices/re-advertise a great deal?

From browsing it certainly *seems* that prices have dropped/you can get much more for your money, than you could this time last year, but I'm wondering if that's just down to my perception of the adverts and not so much the case in reality... Although, I've also noticed a giant increase in the number of horses advertised locally; I've never known the tack shops have anywhere near as many ads up.

Is anyone here buying or selling at all, and/or has any thoughts on the market atm?

I hope to be in a position to be shopping in the somewhat foreseeable future, and in browsing the for sale sites (AKA, tormenting myself/procrastinating from my studies :p) I am seeing some truly gorgeous horses at good prices, that I'm convincing myself won't be available when I get to start making inquiries. Maybe I am just getting frustrated thinking that all the best horses and summer will be passing me by whilst I'm stuck at this desk... :rolleyes:
 
I think this recession has meant many have had to downsize and sell off, so many people have lost their jobs and I think that is reflected in many markets including the horse market. I would be surprised if prices start going up and staying up, the summer might bring a slight increase but I think it may stay lower because of the bigger picture personally.
 
Dead, dead dead. nothing is selling, still plenty of over priced things for sale though. After this winter people don't want any more. Talking to an auctioneer at wigton laast year, he said 15 horses were left at doncaster tb sales, just left! He was trying to sell 80 cob mares with foals at foot in foal for someone (meat horses I would say), though i am not sure he did so you now what tht means! :( It really p*sses me off the amount of mare in foal etc. Why are people still breeding average horses??!! don't breed anything unless its going to be amazing and you can afford to look after/ breaking/ keep it because youngstock isn't selling well at all.
It is true though there is always good money for a good horse though.
 
It's a real funny market at the moment. I have been looking for about 3 months now and am still seeing plenty of overpriced horses - I usually see them readvertised for a bit less a few weeks after I've seen them.
Have also phoned a few times and found that the horse has sold within a couple of days..
I do think that overall I am seeing better quality for the money I've got to spend than I did when I last looked 3 years ago..
Do feel very sorry for some of the sellers that are desperate to sell but just don't get any interest... But it's very frustrating as a buyer as well because people seem to think that the horse won't sell anyway so they don't bother advertising and there really doesn't seem to be much available...

maybe I should go round the TB sales, sounds like I might find a good deal there...!
 
We have been looking for a v large pony/small horse for my daughter and this market seems to be very bouyant. Every horse we have looked at or tried to look at has had multiple viewings/interest. Some have even gone before we get a chance to go and look. These are not cheap nor do the prices seem particularly low especially for the full up 14.2's. If we go to 15hh/15.2hh we will get alot more for our money.

This is perhaps because a JMB measured 14.2 if it is full up is worth a lot in the pony jumping world - but a 15hh is not quite big enough for the horse tracks but is too big for pony classes?

If you're not going for affiliated then a big 14.2 that won't measure in might be well worth while
 
It's funny, the last paragraph I was thinking the exact same thing. Right now, I couldn't buy outright, and want to have a chill period from the horse I loaned (and am still paying off things for... but that's another story...) and so i'm having to wait till end of the summer to buy, but like you instead of doing work I think I have more hits on the horse sellign sights that anything that's going to help with my degree (My excuse is that i'm doing an equine degree... it's research... straw clutching haha)

But yeah I was just convinced all these lovely horses i'm seeing will be twice the price by the time i'm buying because that's the kind of luck I have! but I don't want to enquire now about horses because of not having money for another month or so and many want to sell now because of circumstance.

I think we shall be ok, I did have my knock some sense into me, we're long to come out of the recession entirely.

I'm preferably looking for a TB, I know the sales are bad from when I was in Uni in Ireland last year... so in theory that should be where I head... but autions scare me :-0 haha

LOL! Yes, there are still/always quite a number over priced, ;) and I've also seen a few that have dropped a fair bit in price from being over priced/priced by the old market, to now seeming more reasonable... I just know it'll be sod's law that the couple I've really liked the look of are going to have gone by the time I get round to looking though :rolleyes:

I had that a lot when I was looking last (3 years ago) lots of disappointments and a verrrry long time to find what I wanted :( Maybe that's why I am worrying this time...

I agree, over all :) But then the last horse I bought I only paid about half what she was worth :o :D

I just had a thought, the market may get even more crowded in a few months when many youngster owners are selling up for uni/gap years... :confused:
 
I will be looking for another horse soon, just waiting for some money!

I agree that horses seem to be better value ATM, you can get far more for your money now than 2-3 years ago.

There is something I've got my eye on, hope he will still be for sale by the time I cop my cash!

Disagree with the first - I've sold 3 in the last 6 weeks (a yearling, a 2 year old and a backed and going very nicely 4 year old) and all for sensible (from my point of view :rolleyes:) prices. The 4 year old I'd had a couple of stupidly low offers on just after Christmas - both suggested I ring them if I wanted to drop the price!! They've missed out on a very nice horse!

A friend who produces show ponies has also had a run of time wasters - then sold two ponies for GOOD prices. The third has just started its showing season and picked up a couple of tickets already - so she'd have kicked herself mightily if she'd taken silly offers!

There IS a lot of over-priced 'rubbish' about - but don't expect to get a GENUINE good horse for peanuts!
