I dont know why I did this but everyone thinks ive lost the plot

. Would any of you guys have done the same?

I took my 2 mares out hacking together yesterday afternoon (ride & lead). Everything was fine till we were on our way home & Ebi went lame (ride horse) so off I jump, check feet over etc, start walking home leading both horses. Decided as it was miles away from home was going to get on Chant. Ebis saddle wouldve fitted but the girth is miles too sort (she takes 56", Ebi takes 46") bridle wouldntve fitted as Chant now needs a o/s. So I think about what I can do - finds a suitable place to mount, loops 12ft rope to make reins and jumps on bareback.

Now the more I think about it the more I think I was mad to do this for the following reasons:
1) she isnt 100% out hacking yet
2) shes never been ridden in a halter alone out hacking
3) shes never been ridden bareback
4) shes never been the ride horse, always the lead one

Now she was as good as gold, it was Ebi that nearly had me off by wanting to walk faster than Chant and insisted on being in front that slight bit.

So would you guys have done it? or am I on my own in this mad world of mine?

Hmm, if I was being sensible I would probably say no, but if I had the same situation with my two I probably would have done the same.
Have to say I don't ride and lead in a headcollar though, always put a bridle on the one being led just in case.

Yep your mad, just mainly for wanting to ride and lead bareback in what could be classed as uncontrolled circumstances..... not the safest of ideas

However, good on you as you did something that you would have never ever considered at home, and because of it being spur of the moment everyone was very relaxed about it and didn't start worrying. You always have to start somewhere and you now have a foundation to work from at home knowing that you don't have to worry! ( does that make any sense?)

You should always have the led horse in a bridle as well.If the lame horse had to walk home anyway she might as well have carried you,I think you should have phoned for help but maybe you never had a phone on you.
Glad you got home safely ,have you found out what was wrong with your horse?

Slightly mad - but I have done similar before now and would do the same again if I had to. I always try and do as many "random" things with all my guys to make them as safe as possible. The more random stuff you do the more they ignore you if you are having a "brain fell out" moment!!!

Personally would have done something similar if the horses were good with each other would have swapped the bridle over. if not would have done exactly what you have done, but we don't have any roads to cross/ride on and all ours are used to ride and lead.

No, don't think you are mad at all and would have done the same and so would my very horsey trainer as she believes in just getting on with things - sieze the moment and all that. You could have very easily and quickly slipped off again if there had been a problem - one advantage of bareback.

Plus I'd do anything to avoid walking back as I never feel in control on the floor anyway. But agree you should have both in bridles next time!

i cant lead her in a bridle unfortunately shes much happier in her halter and 12ft rope, plus im safer if she stops dead she doesnt pull me off backwards lol

ll - unfortunately Ebi has had soundness issues for a good few years ago and was retired 3 1/2 years ago. she came sound and back into work 1 year ago, after going barefoot so I dont want to rish anything more than her being slightly lame, i dont want to tempt fate and risk loosing her again

total sense! just hope it wasnt a one off and that the good behaviour is now finished with lol. lots of little blocks all adding up in her learning I think

T_C - i did have my mobile with me but never thought about ringing anyone. Even if I had, i had the landy, the keys for the trailer and everything, so they wouldve had to fetch my car before being able to get to help me.

I know whats wrong with her - she has moments but they have been very few and far between. she was diagnosed with ring bone in her coffin joints and fetlock and was retired 3 1/2 years ago, but after going natural barefoot, she came sound and came out of retirement, i am wondering about buying her some hoof boots to help her.

I would have. However I ride mostly on my own private land so not an issue with insurance/highway regulations.

My god you're crazy woman....this is just one more instance to bring me to this conclusion...I wish I had half your bravery and "go get 'em" attitude

To answer your post...not that I really need to because you know me well.. I would have been sat on a gate sobbing

Actually would never have had the guts to lead your big girl!
You are so matched for my mad mare - apparently when introduced to tarpaulin the other day she walked straight onto it, pawed it all around her and then stood there chewing!

Nic, you make me smile!
you know you want to have a go on Chant! you love her, she only pretends to be naughty half of the time - the rest of the time I havent quite decided lol.

Mols not mad! well not yet anyway. you know im goint to steal her, she needs to come and live with my girls

, shes a great mare and shes a real credit to all the hard work you and andy have put into her.

How was your lesson on Sunday? did you find out about that bit?
ive got a few photos to send you of last Friday, email wont send them in one go

Mol not mad? I think she is getting more daft. She spent most of Monday night giving herself mucky looks everytime we passed the mirrors in the indoor school and apparently, whilst being lunged on Sunday, she was squealing when she saw her reflection! As for Chant, I'll leave her to the expert (you). I like to be closer to the ground
smile.gif
I do love to watch her though, she looks like she floats.

I love Mol! aw bless her! at least she only gave herself mucky looks lol, Chant wouldnt go anywhere near the mirrors the first time she saw them, she freaked out and lost the plot. When she did get near them she just stood staring at herself looking pretty.
Youd have loved her last night - bolted down the field flat out aiming straight for me! she stopped at the last minute then pranced around showing off, god knows what set her off!
youll have to come over and see them soon

lol! I was too PF! Had to find a suitably tall post to climb onto before I could climb onto her - at 17.3hh, im not that nimble to jump on from the ground
