well i've not been hunting since 2004 when i took a hirling down on exmoor and had a fabulous day = but since then life has taken over and it's taken to now to get out again (been a few times draghunting just to see how new horse would go but that's it)

so on sat we ventured out - me and my little mare all dolled up and buzzing with excitement - i didn't sleep a wink on friday as i was so excited - but was a little downhearted to see clear blue skies and warm weather as i knew the scent would probably not be that great.

we had a wonderful day though - my fears of bad scent held true but it was fantastic to be out and open country meant i could see the hounds working.

by mid afternoon though the temp dropped and air changed - and the scent finally became better - i swear to god my horse knew it too - she woke up - changed from bentely to farrari and was quivering with anticipation - ears pricked and watched and listened for the hounds as keenly as me!

and finally - we were standing in a wood and the most beautiful sound in the world filtered through the trees - the hounds were on a fox - the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and my mare and i were raring to go!

god how i've missed it! i've been on cloud nine ever since. i'm hooked once again!

How amazing! Lucky you. Why have you had so much time off? I haven't hunted since early 2006 (when I fell off whilst 3 months pregnant and said no more!) because of babies, and my first day out again will be Christmas Eve. Very excited, but quite nervous too.

i used to be a groom for a hunter hirling yard so went out a lot then - also hunted an old cob that a lady in our village owned but wanted someone to keep fit... then i did a season in the US - 99/00 and had the odd day on hirlings and loan/gifted horses but life (money constraints/college/moving etc etc) took over till now

hope you have a great day on xmas eve :)

it was with the fife - but didn't really drop too much till after it got dark so wasn't too cold
best thing i've found for cold weather is a thermatex hunting waistcoat in canary - keeps you toasty! not sure if they still make them though!
