Whilst browsing in a 'rock bottom' store today i mooched over to the horse feeds dept. Which had the rabbit / guinea pig section next to it.

There, on the end of the aisle were a stack of 'half' straw bales, literally half of your average £3 a bale rectangular horsey stuff, and wrapped in clear polythene. It wasnt dustless, it wasnt anything special, just basic straw (I counted 4 sections per half bale)

and they wanted £10.99 each for them

i almost choked! that's nearly £22 a bale!!!

have I found the most expensive 'it should be gold plated for that price' straw in the country???

Oh sheesh that's nothing! Over here they make miniature bales, about 5 inches by 3 inches by 3 inches and they are the equivalent to about 10 pounds if sold in your country. Now I'm not a straw girl but I am a hay girl, and what always astounds me is alfalfa hay bags about the size of a large pack of crisps in my local pet store selling for $15!!

Crikey it's only about one alfalfa plant that makes up the bag! Cost price; a few cents! I am a mug making alfalfa hay for horse customers!

I find it bizarre how the price of hay and straw goes up for rabbit/guinea/hamster owners for such small portions! At Tesco they sell little shrink wrapped ones for £2.99, my normal bale of hay costs £2.50!

The little girl who shares my pony bought a little tiny bag of Readigrass for £4.99, I told her you could have spent a few more pounds and got the massive bale of the stuff!

That does ake the p

Mind you, most people with small furies wouldnt have space to store a normal bale and it would take forever to use.

Someone who used to share my old mare had small furries & I told her to stuff an empty feed sack with straw whenever she wanted some. I paid £1 per bale from the farmer. Was surprised how grateful she was... until I saw the prices in PetCity or whatever it's called now.

Haha thats ridiculous!
It's like in Tesco, they sell about the equivalent of one slice of hay for £3.90! Pointed out to my Dad i could get a whole bale for less than that!

wellllll, i know of more expensive!!
How about £12.99 for not even a slice of you typical small bales! Go to a fish store, and they sell mini bales of barley straw to help with algae! (and i mean MINI!)
