The occasional long walk for a puppy?

Sorry, it's another one of my stupid questions I'm afraid...

We stick to the 5 minutes per month rule-of-thumb at the moment. But we are going to the woods tomorrow and will be walking for longer than that (probably about 45 mins to an hour, youngest son can't walk much further than that). I'd love to take pup but am worried about breaking him. Does the very occasional long walk hurt them or will he be okay do you think? (4 1/2 month old Cavalier)

Thanks :)

It wouldn't worry me. I do that amount daily with pups that age. If your worried then keep pup on a lead so he can't hammer about and overdo it.

I'd leave the pup at home. As misterjay says, I'd be worried about joints. 4 and a half months is quite a tender age. The length of walk you propose for a pup that age would be like a marathon. I wouldn't do it.

no need to leave at home, get yourself a sturdy backpack and carry on the front (put a puppy pad in for just incase of wees) or you can use a pushchair just pop a puppy harness on.

More they see at this age the better. One word of warning though as other dogs carry lots of nasties if not fully vaccinated yet just keep other dogs away also beware of those that want to take a chunk out of anything unusual. Never had any problems with mine but it can and does happen.

I take my retained pups out with my adults see no reason they should have to stay at home :D

Probably a bit late for this, as you're probably already on your walk, but considering the breed, then I actually wouldn't. I wouldn't put the young, and the not-so-athletic at risk.

Alec.

Thank you all for your replies. Unfortunately I saw all, bar the first, too late. I did take him with us and he seemed to do okay. He was on the lead the whole time so no hooning about or running back and forth, so he only walked the same distance as us, and we stopped several times while the kids were playing. He didn't seem worn out and was still eager as we got back to the car. Overall I think it was good for him to see the sights and smell the smells, met lots of other dogs (he's fully vaccinated) and had fun paddling through the mud! But, with what you've said in mind, I think I'll leave it some time before we do that again with him. Thanks again all :)
