Hi

Now that my horse is 22 he is still in great condition but is starting to show signs of stiffness when coming out of his stable after a night in. He is currently on a general supplement, cod liver oil and biotin for his hooves but i thought he may need an actual joint supplement to try and keep him comfortable especially in winter. Has anyone got any suggestions as to which ones are good?? Thanks

I have had a number of golden oldies over the years :) and have tried all sorts of supplements. Here's my guide as I find it. Cortaflex, better in liquid form but didn't help my arthritic Welshie. Litovet (rosehips) no difference at all. Nupafeed Flex, seems quite good but expensive. I am now trying EquiFlex from VetVits for my 17 year old Welshie. Apart from good old Danilon (bute from the vet) nothing much really helps.

Honestly? Dump all the expensive "branded" supplements.

Make sure that you get your pasture analysed and work out what you ned to feed and feed that (feeding anything else is waste - they don;t need what they are not short of)

The think about adding linseed meal - it's £25 for 20 Kg from Charnwood. It is great for older horses - providing mucilage, Omega 3/6 and oils.

"Solid" seed oils in this form are a better choice than liquid oils. Horses don't eat fish. :)

My 25 year old looks fantastic and has the flexibilty of a 6 year old on a diet of

Fast Fibre
Bran
Speedibeet
Biotin
Copper
Zinc
Micronised linseed
Turmeric
Herbs
Yea-sacc

It as cheap a diet as you could buy - but it's also the highest quality.

Linseed in a horsey superfood IMO

Thanks Oberon - you're the only person that has agreed with me today. Everyone else has been most disagreeable. Been that kind of day :)

I'm just still holding that ? mark over the speedibeet. Our lads seem to tollerate the Simple systems unmolassed beet better.
