The Pagony sweet itch rug and mask - anybody use this?

I think my boy has sweet itch, very mild but still. He rubs his mane and occasionally his tail, quite infrequent but it still damages it.

Ive been looking at rugs and am loathed to buy the boett if he doesnt actually have SI. The Pagony one sounds good. The reviews on it look good but there isnt a huge amount on here about it (am slyly looking at work so might be bypassing it!)

Has/does anyone use this and how effective is it?

If so, where did you buy it? On an old thread someone mentioned Divoza - much cheaper than the original site but in euros... is this safe!?

Think Pagony: rearrange words to suit..... "money, of, waste, total".

Forget it, either buy the (more expensive) Boett, OR go for something like the Rambo hoody, Premier Equine also do some nice SI rugs reasonably priced.

I bought a Pagony for my cob. The quality was AWFUL. I wish I'd sent it back. The stitching was only done single thickness, i.e. like you'd do it on your home sewing machine basically, and not reinforced. The seams quickly came undone and annoyingly I had to then get my sewing machine out to do them all again. And the job that I did was a helluva lot better than the rug was stitched together in the first place :(

Also the straps on it, and the general putting-together of the rug, wasn't easy. My boy somehow managed to get a hind foot caught up in one of the elastic strap-fastening thingeys. He was on livery at the time and apparently they found him with his foot up round his ear, very stressed, in the field.

Pagony's are a total waste of money; dunno what reviews you've found OP but the one I bought was RUBBISH.

I haven't ever used the Boett, so can't vouch for them. People also recommend the Snuggy Hoods ones, again I've not used these.

My fave is the Rambo......... expensive yes, but worth it. Second is the Premier Equine range - cheaper, and serviceable. Easy to put on and take off. The Pagony had to be put on over the head (as I think the Boett's do???) - mine hated it and it became an awful battle, getting worse each time.

Personally I'd go for the Rambo. Can't be bettered IME.
 
I have used the Boett and a similar unbranded version of one. I don't rate them at all. Now use a Rambo or a Premiere Equine. The PE one is on offer right now at £71

I found the Boett style rugs just need to much faffing with and are not very tough, the straps stretch and break and belly fills with hair and irritates.
I tried the Snuggyhoods but my cob overheated in it and it was just a bit to snug. We've never really looked back since getting the Rambo ...just make sure you electric fence off any barbed wire or twiggy branches or anything that could snag a rug or it won't matter what type you use, it will get trashed :)

I had wondered about the premier equine one, didnt realise they were on offer!

If he were to rub in the PE, would it do much harm to the mane/tail? At the moment hes in a standard fly rug and even though the material is lovely and light it seems to give him a better grip on rubbing!
 
As someone else has said; if you've got anything which is liable to rub you really need to use leccy fencing to fence the area off as they'll find something to rub on and that's if your rug is trashed.

Premier Equine do occasional promotions on their rugs; usually are for a day's duration, then the next day its something else, and so on. So if they're on offer today....... then I may well have a look :)
 
The only thing he. Really does have a good rub on is his stable - mane on the door frame mostly! I was surprised that it hasn't wrecked his fly rug. He is also very agile with his hinds and manages to give his mane a good scratch with his back feet!

I think im gonna go for it and get the PE..

Most importantly... have I left it too late to be rugging him for it to help him? I know you should really start March ot so time but this is my first summer with him.
 
it might not be SI. my cob with typical symtoms was blood tested and it turned out to be a grass allergy. Rugs therefore are pointless for him. Please call your vet and discuss the itchiness with him.
 
Agree re making sure its sweet itch before forking out a huge amount on rugs but if his symptoms a eased by a rug then it's worth it anyway.
it's never too late for the rug to go on but it may take a week or so for the itching to die down :)
 
I quite Like the look of the Shires rug and in that your horses itching is mild it may be ok but it wouldn't work for my two...I need the rug to go over the ears to protect the top of the mane and the tail flap looks quite small. also I'm not sure what denier it is. the PE and the Rambo are both 1200 + which is what you need for itchers.

No. I havent used it but just noticed it when looking for something else. I have 2 horses 1 with SI who had rambo hoodies and plenty of fly repellant I find Phaser good. my other horse we thought also had SI but it turned out to be a grass allergy so he doesnt require rugging.
Both are on Piriton as prescribed by the vet its quite cheap and it helps enormously.
 
I've used the Premier Equine (currently I have two of these), the Rambo (one) and the Boett (three old and trashed ones). I started out with the Boetts, which are fine but fiddly, although my headshy girl got very used to them going over her head and was okay with it. The Rambo is good, although I don't use the hood bit as I found that this, coupled with a fly mask, made her head too hot so I removed the over the ears bit. Premier Equine works too and all of them stand up to rubbing in the stable.

A friend has the Shires one and it seems to work fine for her boy, although he isn't as hard on his rugs as my elephant is. i might well give it a go next time I need to replace one.
 
I prefer the look of the shires si combo (not the tempest one) as this looks exactly the the PI - has ears and a large tail flap.

This ^^^

Yes get bloods done if that's the way you decide to go; but putting on a rug won't do any harm and might do an awful lot of good.
 
Ah well.....I just bit the bullet and bought the PE one.. thank god its payday next Friday!

May aswell spend an extra bit on a proven rug than get a cheaper one thats naf!

Sorry meant to add that "cheap and cheeful" fly and/or SI rugs aren't always so............. the worst value one I ever bought was the Amigo Mio - didn't last five minutes in spite of being quite pricey IMO.

In the end used it just for "standing in" in the stable. Expensive little item, that.

Derby House did a SI hoody a while back: I've got it - in a bag in the tackroom, not used it yet, but don't know how it will last when I do eventually lose it.

IF you can get them........ and I've tried to get another - Pessoa did a sweet itch hoody a few years ago. Got it for Trad-Lad, and it just lasted, and lasted, and lasted. It was a fantastic rug, think I got it on Equestrian Clearance a good few years back now - and have looked/Googled since, and just can't find one!
 
My horse has sweet itch and I think he has been through most rugs including Boett and he just ripped them all - then last year I bought Premier Equine rug and not a rip and his sweet itch is at long last under control with the help of Switch lotion. I actually bit the bullet and bought a second identical rug at the end of the summer so he can wear one and have one in the wash.. yes they are expensive but one year he went through 3 rugs in a month so the rugs are a saving in the long run :)

I've been dealing with sweet itch on my cob for 16 yrs and since using the Rambo and/ the PE RUG he's been relatively itch free

* I have just returned from the field to find my cob naked!!!! :eek:On closer inspection I found he still had the neck part of the rug round his neck but had left the body of the rug hanging off a gate post...it was the PE one and had come clean apart where the neck joins the body...thank goodness, as it will be easy to repair. I must add that my cob is built like a brick poo house and probably didn't even notice he was hooked on something. I have now fenced the gate post off with electric:o
 
Well I'll let you all know in a few weeks time! Typically he came in from the field tonight without a single rub!
