The perfect mane?

Any tips how to pull a mane so that you can get it nice and thin so to make really nice little rosettes but at the same time not loosing lenght ie i dont want to have a horse with a mohawk either :P
 
I once asked the same question to a showing expert and was told the best way was to brush the mane to the other side and use pliers to pull out the underside layer of the mane, sounded not so nice to me and I just went for normal pulling. I pulled the mane very short and it was very thin, then when it grew it stayed thin and I just used scissors upwards like they do at the hair dressers and it is now relatively long but still thin.
 
the pliers sounds a little barbaric :p
Has anyone tried brushing it to the oppisite side and then cutting some of the underlayer, ie kinda hog it? or will that make it stick up all over the place?
 
some one mentioned on a thread the other day that they flipped the mane over the other side then used clippers along the neck to take a 'strip' off thus thinning it - i would either pull it traditionally or use a mane rake and scissors which i use on mine - gets great results - you'd never know the difference!
 
I always cut a bit of my horses mane off when I clip her but I wouldn't do that if you want it to look nice and neat as it does grow back sticky out-ey so you will have to keep doing it!
 
dont mind having to constantly maintain it :) Just want to be able to plait my boys mane nice and neatly not have big clumps of rosettes :D

Oh that's interesting. I'd never thought of or heard of doing that before. Gosh you would need a very steady hand and need to make sure the horse stands still. I supposes it would also need to be clipped just before you plaited every time, otherwise stubby hairs would show through. Do many people use this method do you think?

I have a horse with a bog brush mane who hates having it pulled. Thinning rakes and solo combs are fine if you don't need to plait, but they create wispy ends of many different lengths, which is not ideal for plaiting. I'm not sure if I dare clip one half of his mane off though?
 
We use a clipper blade just like a normal pulling comb to thin and shorten. Then use OHs hair clippers on just the ends. Works on ours and on my daughters police horses. !
