Went to move the strip fence tonight, ground has dried up a bit so had to pull on a post pretty forcefully to shift it. Unfortunately I had leant over the post to gain leverage and as I pulled it fired out of the ground and into my face. There is now a big hole where there shouldn't be a hole...I impaled my lip between the post and my tooth. Not the most hygenic way to gain a lip piercing but effective. Cue pouring blood for 20mins as a tried to mop it up with dirty hands and sleeves. Bet it'll look great in the morning.

Dangerous business this horse ownership!

Owowowow

I once tried to open an electric gate from a horse... Bareback... shocked self and pony, pony sodded off home, ditching me (I was hanging off the side to reach the gate anyway!) and shocked myself again on descent too :o

Never given myself a piercing with it though :p

And there was me thinking that not hopping quite high enough over and getting zapped where you don't want to be zapped was the sorest thing you could do with electric fencing! But that pales in comparison! I hope it heals quickly!

Ouchies!!

My problem with electric fencing is I always step over it and give myself a shock down there. You would think I would learn but I keep forgetting about it and keep doing it

Ooooh ow!
I'm another who has shocked her nether regions too many times! I'm such a clutz!

Hope you heal up soon OP or get a nice lip ring! ;)

Lucky for me i have such a thick head! It's swelling nicely now so by tomorrow I'm sure I'll look like I'm on losing end of a fight.

Just tell people "you should see the other guy" then ;):D

Not that I'm saying you're a guy! sorry just read that back and it sounded bad ha ha!

Haha, that's ok, the people at work would probably believe it! It could look a lot worse today, the last time I did something similar (playing lacrosse and ran face first into someone's skull, piercing my top lip with my tooth) half my face went blue and swelled up massively for a week. I might gain a matching scar on my bottom lip now!

Ouch! I had a post recoil at me and hit me in the eye, cutting my lense last year  Cue trip to hospital, an eye patch and antibiotic cream for a couple of days. Looked a right state! Hope you heal quickly.

Many of us use electric fencing but do we really give much thought to what we use & why we use it?

I have always been an advocate of rope, it is sturdy, it looks neat & tidy, easy to work with, carries a charge well & doesn’t flap about in windswept paddocks. All this is true but I have now done a complete ‘U’ Turn due to a horrific accident.

We turned out one of our horses in a paddock surrounded by electric rope fence, the power was off at the time. He pawed the ground & decided to role but he was too close to the fence. He rolled over, caught the rope fencing, spooked himself, & charged off across the paddock. He caught the rope around his hind leg & ripped out the fencing, plastic posts & a couple of wooden posts as he went. Fortunately he didn’t receive much of an injury, a couple of grazes was about all.

Biggest problem was my wife was in the paddock, the fencing rope got yanked around the back of her legs, dragging her to the ground. The injuries to her legs are horrendous. She had cuts, bruising & a large amount of skin removed behind her knees. She could hardly walk & was on pain killers & a nurse is dressing her wounds daily. They were treating the injuries as burns.

I made enquiries about the breaking strain of the rope….it’s 383kg…. bloody hell . I have now replaced the rope with tape, still with 6 conductor wires but this has a breaking strain of around 75kg.

I appreciate this is a long post but I thought it would warn people of the dangers that may not have been considered.

TZ - your poor wife, I hope she recovers quickly from her injuries.

Rope can cause horrific injuries - there is a picture of a horse's leg in the veterinary conditions to testify to that. It is advised that you use multiple metal joiners with rope fencing and only ever tighten these hand tight, so that the rope will pull through in an accident situation.

These are the joiners-

YasandCrystal.....thanks for the concern. This happened a while ago & everything is now healed however she will carry the scars on the backs of her legs forever.

I don't trust the rope even with lightly tightened connections. Now I would only use rope on permanent fencing i.e. running along the top of post & rail to stop chewing.

Incidentally if anyone needs between 700 & 800 metres of 'Turbo' yellow & white 6 conductor electric rope & a load of connectors & insulators contact me.......I've no more use for it. I only usec it for around 6 months or so. :)
