The plot thickens - Riders access to my park

It seems to be the standard argument - as well as that the horses will kill any child on sight within a 50 metre radius

pagancloughie, that would be my argument as well. Get the local gardeners association onside, tell them they can have as much free manure as they want. I know that we as horsy people are biased, but honestly, stepping in horse poo is nowhere near as nasty as stepping doggy poo - even doggy people with no interest in horses will tell you that. Foxes poo in the parks as well, does this muppet propose we shoot all the foxes? Actually, he probably does, but still...

How on earth are horsey people still alive - I mean mucking out stables with bare hand etc. The fact is dog poo is packed full of nasty bacteria but also Toxocariasis, Horse poo generally does not pose a health risk.

well i guess it depends on the sort of park it is.
i really dont want piles of dung dotted between the swings & the slide...

I understand some parks issue permits for riders?

Why not get a comitee together and say that permits could be issued on the basis that each permit holder must agree to help collect poo on a regular basis (perhaps a rota) and donate it to the park gardener? It would certainally shut the busy bodies up.
I'd also get the BHS on hand, and approach this in a proffessional manner, so they take you more seriously.

Did you manage to speak to the council?

Ditto comments about dog poo - this changes the soil content whereas horse poo doesn't - it's only grass after all and will decompose! I don't think it's even in the new highway code and as far as I know (correct me if I am wrong) but there are no laws to say that we have to pick it up!!

I've not spoken to them yet, I wanted to see what the reaction was before a formal approach as I don't want to jeopardise it with a half baked proposal without some sound counters to their arguments.

Any suggestions to the responses would be welcome !

I can give you some useful stuff to put in your arguement and also some stuff linked to 2012 which may give you some leverage!

definately contact them - just to find out who the ROW officer is - you don't need to make a case to them at this point and also get in touch with the BHS officer for your area - they may have some other background info you may not be privvy to which could help.

If you can, also find out why the horses were banned in the first place - depending on what the answer is here it may or may not be worth continuing!

Just ignore the paper's comments for the time being until you can prepare a strong case!

I've fired an Email off to the BHS's director of access, safety and welfare - Mark Weston (I posted up a petition on the 10 downing st website on his behalf).

I'm hoping he can help from that side, or at least offer the best advice
