Bruce has a problem, please help him.

He is addicted to chewing his rugs. Be it a summersheet or a heavyweight, he just cant resist using his rugs as dental floss. No, he is not hot and over rugged. He is destructive and a juvenile delinquent. His new trick is removing his summer sheet without undoing any of the straps. If you put a roller on him he chews the back half of the rug. If you dont he chews the front and back half of the rug. He does this whenever he feels like it - demonstrated when, two weeks ago after he had a lesson, I put a cooler on him....it had a hole in it in under 2 minutes. No, I am not exaggerating.

I am looking for ways to distract Bruce. A sweede on a string is not going to do the job here - I am talking overnight distraction.....I am taking this route before other more serious planscome into play (like muzzles.....tried a bib it didnt work!)

Please help HHO members. Someone must have a solution. I am tempted to get his teeth removed......

could you get a plant sprayer filled with something he wouldn`t like to make the rug taste ugh?(dettol?)may rot stitching though.
naughty bruce!

Dont put a rug on at all, perhaps a few chilly moments will help him to appreciate how nice you are being to him, other than that you can get a special muzzle that looks like a feed scoop that stops them getting to their rugs but they can still eat and drink!!

Merlinsquest, that was my thought, however on more than one occasion this winter YO found him fully clipped and naked in the corner of his stable shivering....his rug neatly pooed on at the other side of his box.

The bib thing does not work....

Where can I get gross tasting rug wash?

NAUGHTY BRUCE!

Oh, he is determined isnt he..... next step in my case would be to spray his rug with mustard, cribbox, bitter alloes (sp) etc to see if that will put him off.

can vouch for the spray from naf it stopped Pidge destroying the front of his rugs last winter and this winter he left them alone

Can also vouch for the NAF stuff. My friend uses it on her horse's rugs to stop my horse chewing them. I'm lucky though as he never touches his own rugs!

We have used that NAF stuff as well, but more because one of the horses in our field likes to pull the rugs off the others.

Also how about one of the rollernut balls as a distraction for a while?

They are such monsters when they do this sort of thing. My youngster 'ate' his stable one year. I had to spray the walls with jeyes fluid to stop him.

He is a bugger. YO called me today to say she arrived this morning to find him with his rugs half on - he had managed to get them as far as his roller and then gave up I think.....

Going to invest in some NAF stuff I will do an update!
