I found this story on a homepage for a Finnish Lapphund kennel in Norway a while ago and liked it so much that I saved the page in my computer, to see if I would have time to translate it one day. It says it was written by an unknown author on kennel Lappehiet's old homepage.

The right path.

A man and his dog came walking along a road. The man went and admired the surroundings when it suddenly went up to him that he had died the night before.
He remembered clearly that the dog that went by his side had died several years ago. He began to speculate on where the road would lead them.
After a while they came to a high white stone wall that went along one side of the road. The wall was made of the finest marble. On top of a long hill there was a high portal in the wall, that glowed in the sunlight. The man went off the road and up a path of cobblestones that led to the archway. There was a gate made of the mother-of-pearl and inside he could sense a path that led to a new gate of pure gold.

The man and the dog walked toward the gate and when he came closer he saw that at one side of the gate, a man sat beside a small table.
When he came close enough he said: "Excuse me sir, but where are we?"
"This is Heaven," was the answer he got.
"Incredible! Do you possibly have any water to spare?" asked the man who suddenly felt a little thirsty.
"Of course my good man, just come in and I will get you some water with ice."
The man at the gate made a hand motion and the gate began to open up. The man who had walked the long way, pointed to his dog and said: "Can my friend also come in?"
"Sorry, but we do not let in pets," was the answer he received.

The man thought about it a moment, turned and went back to the road. He continued on the path he had walked on with his dog. They went a long time and got to another hill. A muddy dirt road lead up to an open farm gate that looked like it had never been closed. There was no fence there either and behind was green meadows. When he approached the gate, he saw a man inside who stood leaning against a tree while reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he shouted to the book reader, "have you any water to spare?"
"Yes of course, there is a water pump right over there," the book reader answered and pointed to the other side of the green meadow - "come in!"
"What about my friend?" said the man, and pat the dog on the head.
"There should be a bowl by the pump," said the book reader.
They went through the gate, over the meadow and beside an old hand pump stood a bowl. The man filled the bowl and gave it to his dog and then drank himelf, until he was not thirsty anymore.

When they where finished, he and the dog walked back to the man who still stood by the tree reading.
"What do you call this place?" he asked.
"This is Heaven," was the answer he got.
"Hm, this is confusing," said the man - "for another further down the road said that was heaven!"
"Oh, you mean the place with gold, cobblestones and the extravagant gate? Oh no, that is Hell!" the man by the tree answered.
"But are you not angry when they abuse the name in that way?" came from the man with the dog.
"No, I can understand that you believe it, but we are just glad that they sift out the people who are willing to leave their best friend for a glass of water."
