Well, the long journey (5 hours) to Lincoln was definitely worth it, and particularly nice that the long term weather forecast of heavy showers was wrong! Although we drove through a couple of showers on the way up, we arrived to find the sun shining at the showground. Once the ginger one was settled into his temporary stable where he seemed happy and relaxed, we pootled back to the horsebox where OH displayed his culinary skills by rustling up some burgers and sausages with various accompaniments, followed by chocolate brownies and washed down with wine, beer (plus lemonade for the Sprog).

Sunday dawned and the sun was still shining, even if the air was rather chilly to start. First off was the Riding Test - the Sprog did what I thought was a very nice test, although you are never sure whether the judge is going to agree. A few piccies from the Riding Test:

Then onto the dressage, doing Prelim 12, which isn't the best test for the ginger one as he usually does better when the test is a bit more complicated. But his test was overall very pleasing, apart from the appalling halt at the end! Piccies from the dressage:

Finally, the scores went up and we were thrilled to see that the Sprog had got a whopping 77.14% in the Riding Test, which put her into second place in her arena (the leader having less than 0.5% more than her). BRC don't have a ride-off to determine individual placings, but employ a formula which compares scores between arenas, and the Sprog ended up second overall as well (and actually had higher collectives than the individual champion). Even better, the team was second as well!

In the dressage, we found that they had scored 71 point something, which put them in 5th place in their arena and the team was sixth as well.

So we finally left on the long journey home with a lovely clutch of rosettes, and even better enjoyed an free run back down south and managed to get home just before dark!

Just to finish, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the staff and volunteers at the Championships who worked hard to ensure that everything went smoothly. I know some helpers were working very long hours, particularly the people involved in stabing who had to sort out all sorts of problems and were beavering away late at night and were back on duty early the next morning.

Glad you had a good time and well done on the results!

Many people travelling on Friday had nightmare journeys as there were so many traffic problems on the major roads. The approach road to the showground was also closed at about 9pm. Initally only a partial diversion was put in place and that added as much as an hour to some of the journeys. One group from Cornwall were on the road for just over twelve hours. It usually takes them around seven !

In those circumstances all we could really do was hang on in there and at least get the late arrivals in and settled as quickly as we could.
Speaking as one of those who left late and was back early the following morning your kind comments are much appreciated, and I will make sure that they are passed on.

Hi PucciNponi - yes, I was part of the early and late turn stabling team, and one of the SJ commentators the rest of the time!

It's a huge undertaking, with a vast team of people (mainly volunteers) all striving for the same goal, which is to make sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible, and that the competitors enjoy themselves.

The team from the office also put in very long hours, not just at the championships but in the run up as deal with pretty much all of the preparation.

Yes, any kind of show is difficult to run and organise. You must be very glad now it's over til next year. Or have the preparations for next year already started?! ;)

For a forigen numpty what is the difference between the riding and the dressage tests?

For a forigen numpty what is the difference between the riding and the dressage tests?

A riding test is similar in format to a dressage test, but the emphasis is more on the performance of the rider, although the horse's way of going is still deemed to be important on the basis that that is influenced by the rider. Like a dressage test, there are marks for each movements plus collectives, but the collectives are for things like rider's seat position, legs, arms and hands, empathy and effectiveness, rather than the horse's paces, impulsion etc.

Hope that explains it!
