Today I spent the morning stewarding at Gt Tew. Was great as got to catch up with Jiffy, Tigers_eye and Saf.

Well another fun packed morning, Ive been stewarding dressage for years normally theres just the odd one or two you have to remind to drop the whip or take boots off before entering, but today........

I had one lady who was late (first in) had phoned in to secretary who hadnt passed it on. Judge (very well known) was furious - but i managed to dampen the flames.
Anyway, things ran smoothly, and said rider came in on her 2nd horse at her allocated time.
Meanwhile mother (also stewarding another section) gets told WHY didnt she tell so and so to drop their whip? because theyve just been eliminated for carrying one... now i dont mean to be rude but WHOSE job is it to read the rules?
TBF on stewards we dont have eyes in the back of our heads, but usually we will just make the comment although MOST riders read the rule book, but there were quite a few riders who would watch out for themselves when they were going in and by the time we had found them they were hot footing it to their arena, which is perfectly acceptable and makes our job easier.

Next up in my arena girl with very nice horse who did Badminton last year (so is semi retired with younger less experienced rider) trots around i see she has no gloves and tell her connections who manage to stop her whilst trotting round and she puts her gloves on. She did a smashing test even tho said horse promptly flying changed every single time over the center line, obviously remembering his 4* tests lol.
Later on first horse that missed its slot, goes in, again i notice rider with no gloves, which i mention to mother, mother shouts at daughter who has already realized as judge has blown her up for it - shouts back to daughter who says *mother where are my gloves*
shocked.gif
Im sorry but whose job it is to remember gloves??
Rider continues down center line.....

Oh but it gets better.......

Whilst checking out the competition i notice someone trotting around who doesnt look particuarly tidy, rider slouched horse being hurried along, there seems to be something looking not quite right with his tack....
His bridle is back to front, brow band behind the ears and the headpiece where the browband should be. Looked all very uncomfortable.
Steward asks him to change it, but said rider wont! apparently horse was being a dog to fit a bridle to.
Said rider continues to warm up, at least an hour in quite hot humid conditions.
Rider then goes in to do test, afterwards judge goes over to tell him about his headgear.
I dont know the outcome but to me it was wrongly fitted tack, and looked quite dangerous/uncomfortable for the horse - i did check score board as i left to see he hadnt been TE or anything.. so i give up on that one.

There were also your odd one or two who looked like they had been dragged through a hedge backwards, missing buttons on jackets and badly fitted numbers or hair flowing in the wind (and im not just meaning the girls).

So today was def not a boring day stewarding........

PMSL! Surprises me not at all! We spend ages trying to look smart and respectably tidy, and get our horses clean, and then complete tramps think nothing of wandering in looking like a scarecrow!

Never mind, least kept you amused!!

I never get bored stewarding- too many amusing things to see!!
I normally do sj collecting ring so you get chatted up continously by the boys as they want to go in early and everyone gets cross with you when they turn up very early and have to wait their turn!!

I did it today for the first time in years and have 2 main stories that came out of it which I already posted on AHHO! But here they are again lol

was talking to a young girl of about 13 after one of the classes. I wanted to tell her well done and some points from the judge.

She has been loaning her first horse for a few months and told me that she's always been to the local shows to watch and it was a dream come true to be able to ride at them this year.
Totally brought a lump to my throat and I just wanted to share it with everyone to remind us that even if we are having a bad day with our horses that there are millions of young girls (and boys) out there who would jump at the chance to be in our shoes!

Stark contrast to the girl I heard shouting at her pony that she would slit it's throat if it didn't behave. I really hope I misheard her...

Not stewarding, but saw a VERY funny sight when leaving Downham last week. Had to slow right down to overtake a parked car and noticed a man jogging up the road to the car, he was wearing only shoes and socks and smoknig a cigarette.

There was a woman in car who was laughing and had locked all the doors.

My 15 year old encouraged me to slow even more and beep the horn as we passed!

Great to see you today and to meet tiger's_eye and Saf!

Do you know when that woman first rode over to me & said she was concerned about rider no. XXX warming up "because his bridle was on back to front" I thought for a 1/4 of a second this has got to be a wind-up
crazy.gif
...but no! It was very bizarre! I'm pleased the mist lifted and I was surprisingly 'red' from sunburn

when I got home.

PS Sorry if I startled you Saf, when I shouted your number across the arena to get your attention & introduce myself to say Hello!

Which arena were you on?

I was at the scoreboard and was listening to the mother of said child saying to someone how terrible it was that she had been eliminated!! They forget that the rules are there to protect the horse and rider's safety - all mum was interested in was getting her test sheet so they could see how she had done!

Sorry forgot to say also saw someone very unsportingly giving their horse a few whacks with the whip after the last fence
frown.gif
some people are pretty damn mean!

And this is why i Show Jump ! Does a missing button or pair of gloves really impare your performance
crazy.gif
I mean FFS....either you can do the movements, or you can't

L, K, I and J.

Rider with dodgy tack was in M.

I see two were eliminated in K, one for learning wrong test the other for whip.

So what is the ruling on gloves? and upsidedown bridles for that matter lol

Nope, but boy do you look bloody scruffy.

After all Rules are Rules and im sure some of the rules in BSJA are just as stupid. Mind you, sjing isnt like dressage in that its also the overall presentation not just how you execute the movement.

LOL!

Nahhh......There are no stupid rules in BSJA.........well, perhaps except that you can only use the whip 3 times, and you can only smack the horse on it's rump
crazy.gif
Has anyone ever done that

And then there's those that roll up minutes before their test cantering a slightly startled horse into warm-up shouting YOOHOO I'M HERE!!!...

Sounds like an amusing day!!

Well done with Snoopy as well, was that the day before??

BBs - They guy with the bridle back to front does usually have a groom, its me ! (not my normal job may I add - he is actually a friend - come on we all have a wealthy potty man who is actually good company when he's not being potty!)
I dont think he has ever tacked his own horse up, has a groom at home aswell!
Well that mare is a b*t*h from hell! I wasnt there grooming as she reared when I was plaiting her on saturday night and trampled me ! she is so bloody difficult I struggle to tack her up so I expect he had a nightmare.
That mare is also the hardest thing in the world to ride, and trust me anyone would struggle to look pretty on her ! didnt believe it till I tied myself !
Next time I will make sure her bridle is on correctly and please accept my apologies if he was rude !x

PMSL, I know of him too, but i still couldnt believe it, probably because he WOULD normally have someone to do it for him.
I parked next to him years ago in his swish lorry, and like you say he is quite potty lol

Ark well, it amused me, but i cant help but feel the rules are crap when a whip or gloves could eliminate you but a badly fitted bridle cant.

I dont think he was rude and he did go away chuckling.

You at BCA this weekend hon?

Potty is an understatement but he is very miss understoud ! Your lucky he wasnt bringing his rottweilers into the dressage arena with him ! - Doesnt say you cant in the rule book!
Yes I am at BCA ! Really looking forward to it as its our first PN, but slightly nervous as have only been able to ride twice since borde hill as have been ill and really wanted to go schooling, but im sure we'll be fine ( she says whilst running to the toilet )
Are you there on sat or sun? im there both days, competing on sat and helping "our friend" and saf on sunday.

The rottweiller phrase gave it away, now I know who we are talking about, I have got to say as a fellow competitor this rider has always been very polite, supportive and friendly to me at competitions, he does seem to have a great amount of determination although does come accross a little eccentic!!!
