...To bit my little Oscar!!

He is 3 in april, so a little l8r than some, but the right time for him. I put my friends bit in tonight to find out his size and a 5 inch fitted perfect. So thats the size i am going for.

I dont know which type of bit is best though. I was going to use an NS starter bit but thought maybe he will accept it better if i start him in a rubber one?!

Obviously he isnt going to be backed for a while cause he is still a baby but i will walk him out with it on under his dually (which he is very well behaved in!)

Any advice as i have herd you should and shouldn't bit them with rubber? I had also been advised to cover it in honey to help him accept it by local tack shop?! Is this a good idea?

Any experiacnes apreciated!

Thanks
Michelle

I'd be careful if you use a straight bar rubber or vulcanite bit, as they can get into the habit of working their tongue over it, unless you have it very high up in the mouth. I'd go for something with a link in the middle to encourage him to mouth it, and if only leading, a loose ring would be good, again to encourage play.

IMO a loose ring french link snaffle is probably the best thing, it lets them mouth the bit without getting their tongue over too easily, and lets them get the feel of the bit in the mouth but not the nut-cracker action of a single jointed snaffle.

^^^ ditto this^^^^ but in addition I prefer to use a copper mix bit such as this:
