Basically trying to do some research on the best joint supplements, have read alot of posts on here from previous threads. However the two that the vets recommend, i.e synequin and cosequin don't have MSM in, which all the others do.

Grand flex don't use it too actually - As msm is known for it's anti inflammatory qualities. Now this is is making me want to make sure that I do not use it as i would not want anything to mask or relieve the pain. I would want to know about it and deal accordingly.

However, suppleaze gold, riaflex, superflex and so on all have msm. Whereas as mentioned before the ones which actual scientific proof that it actually does help the joint doesn't have it.

Now I know MSM is a good carrier of HCI, so a good reason why it is used, but does anyone know the amount per day you can feed MSM before it becomes a pain reliever or anti inflammatory.. i.e fed at small amounts will it have much of an effect?

It's all so confusing especially as I am pretty dumb at the best of times.. lol

The worst thing is on here with everythread I have read, everyone has preffered the 'said' other products to the cosequin and synequin which are the ones that ARE supposed to work!

Also, Apparently horses will need about 8g of glucosamine HCI whereas some of these supplements just give 5.5g and I have read that glucosamine chondroitin cannot even be absorbed into the body, so what's the poin of this?

Well, my vet doesn't think any of the joint supplements do much. He is happy to prescribe either of the two 'approved' ones if insurance will cover it, but he doesn't think they are worth the money of buying yourself. He thinks the clinical trials are actually pretty inconclusive for all nutroceuticals and in general they are a waste of money.

They may work for some horses, of course. Glucosamine and chondoitin seem to help some people with some kinds of arthritis, but have no effect on others - and their value as a preventative is pretty speculative.

I know it's annoying isn't it and i wonder how much we feed into our horses to make ourselves feel better! lol

I suppose it's a horses for courses thing, but then alot of people say they have had wonderful results, but these are based mainly on the msm ones!

Glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally occurring substances found in the cartilage. They can be easily absorbed by the body when in a product which is bioavailable. MSM is a naturally occurring substance which can be found in virtually every cell of the body and has a strong anti-inflammatory effect like you said. If your using natural products they won't mask the pain like medical drugs will but just help to relieve the symptoms or if used early enough delay/prevent the onset of the condition. If your using a natural product it won't have the strong painkilling qualities that a drug would.

What type of arthritis does your horse have? Do you not want to use MSM to see if the glucosamine and chondroitin are working?
