I love New Forests and this would be the perfect pony to add to my collection...

God I hope its at the sales as they can't breed from/register him... how much you'd think it'll go for though...

Argh! The mother is not dun, she is Buckskin. Assumably the sire must be either buckskin or palomino, and the foal is therefore either a cremello or perlino - its really not that hard to get.

I don't understand why such a big fuss is being made about it

I expect someone will buy him privately before he ends up at the sales! If you are interested, check out his dam's brand and find out who the owners are - that's what I did when I saw one I liked on the forest near Sowley

You are right, it is cute.

I don't know if buckskin or palomino can be registered, but it is silly if it can't be - after all if the dam is registered she is registered incorrectly, as she is a buckskin not a dun! People seem to be somewhat in denial about genetics - if a foal is born from two registered parents, how can it not be registerable just because of its colour?

Found this on the Breed Society page:

[ QUOTE ]
Colour
New Forest ponies may be any colour except piebald, skewbald, spotted or blue eyed cream. Palomino or very light chestnut and cream ponies with dark eyes are not eligible as licensed stallions. Blue eyes are not permitted. White markings on the head and legs are permitted, except “a pony shall not have any white markings on pink skin behind the head, above a horizontal line level with the bony protuberance of the accessory carpal bone at the back of the knee in the forelimb, and the point of the hock in the hind limb.”

[/ QUOTE ]

So that is quite bizarre. Apparently buckskin is fine, because presumably it will be called dun. Yet it is the same gene that causes buckskin as palomino but a pally or double creme can't be registered as a licensed stud *shakes head*

Surely if it's a double dilute he'd be worth money as he'd always sire cremellos?

I'm certainly no expert tho!

No he wouldn't always sire cremellos, but any foals he'd produce would either be cremello, perlino or smokey creme [all look very similar], or palomino, buckskin or smokey black.

he would have to be cut before being sold..

thats what i was told last weekend in Lyndhurst , so as to stop the gene being passed on..

he also wouldnt be eligable for registration in the NFPBCS

I have a soft spot for cremellos as I used to own one - an American Saddlebred - complete stunner but I haven't got one photo of him with his eyes open!

the only dun out on the forest last year was Buckland Cruiser....

will check to see if he was Lyndhurst way..

Is it the same foal that's been running up at Canada Common? That one has bay mother . . . . if not, there's another one there.

I love the fact that they can't decide on the mare's colour in the article - she's "dun-coloured" at the top and "chestnut" in the picture caption

If dad is a palomino/buckskin I would question if this wee fellow is pure NF, as these guys are not allowed to run with the herds on the forest. Could it be there has been an unlicensed escapee or another breed that escaped and got lucky. Doubt anyone will fess up. BTW I know of a stunning bay roan 4 sale just out side Bristol....Not mine but used to belong to a friend who sold her on and has now turned up in my neck of the woods....small world

Since finding out about this I have taken a little more notice of the ponies I see out and about and a large number are buckskin or smokey or palamino, so this is likely to start happening a lot.

I would guess he would have to go on the X register rather than the full one. Poor little chap, it's not his fault he came out that colour and therefore can't be fully registered. Never mind, he's still lovely
