Since started riding at the start of this year, I have found as a man that the sitting trot is most uncomfortable ??. I use 2 pairs of pants, ordinary underpants and boxer trunks to alleviate the pain ?.Are there any men out there who know of a different solution to solve this common problem ?

Oh, another thread on men and pants? Most of them turn out to be a bit creepy but I did look and you have also done some innocuous posts, so here goes...

You need tight budgie smuggler pants and hitch the junk up into them. Then, you need to sit on your seat bones.

Sitting trot is tricky. You need to be 'poised' rather than either tense or relaxed. When sitting in the saddle, try to either raise your seat bones up into your glutes, or relax them down so they grind into the saddle. Get a feel for both then raise them so they are half way between the two. This can be practiced at halt and walk.

Trot needs to be learned on a horse who can actually relax their backs. My youngster has never had the need to 'protect' his back and is consequently swinging and easy to sit to the trot. It feels smooth and with suspension. Best to avoid thumping horses (often the heavier ones - feels like no suspension fitted there) or pounding horses (often the big moving warmblood type with simply too much rise and fall to learn on). Once you can do the movement, then you can move to more challenging ones to sit.

For body awareness, I also often teach to separate the hips, so one is going up whilst the other is going down. You would need someone on the floor to coordinate which one would be up and which down until you can feel it. That takes the feeling of bounce out of the equation as your centre stays more even whilst the hips move independently. That does require someone who understands what I am on about to show you in person though.

I am not a man, but have taught many, many adult men to ride in comfort!

Red-1 has explained it. I find sitting trot almost impossible on some horses, almost easy (though I've by no means mastered it) on others.

My instructor says to lean back; you feel like you're leaning really far but in fact you're not. He even says that you need to get like you're almost lying down. It would be a good idea to get somebody to take a photo of you to show the difference between your real position and what you feel it and imagine it to be.

On the subject of wearing two pairs of underpants...

I had intended to save this for it's own thread, but I'll unveil the idea here.

I always wear a proper shirt with long sleeves and collar. I had trouble with my shirt coming untucked. Even shirts that are really long in the body wouldn't stay tucked in all day when riding or doing physical, active jobs.

So: double kecking.

V-neck t-shirt tucked into the first pair of kecks, shirt tucked in between first and second pair.

It helps to have low-rise second pair or high-waist trousers; you'll end up looking like a wannabe rapper if everybody can see the brand name on the waistband of the second pair.

Hi everyone
Thank you for the answers.
Tucking the shirt into the trousers, then in between the first and 2nd pants appears to be a good idea.
For years I have never tucked tops into trousers, one reason being the expanding waistline.
Haven't eaten a big mac for ages so will try this method.
It helps that jodhpurs are elasticated so are quite forgiving.
BTW Learnt 2 new words today, "innocuous" and "kecking".
