Ok, maybe I am being slightly dramatic BUT I have measured ponio's saddle and it measures 11.5 inches between the D rings!! And fits a 14hh pony!

I swear that pony is as wide as he is tall (how I manage to fall off is a mystery - I mean, if I where to sit on a table I wouldn't fall off, but then the table probably wouldn't motorbike round corners....anyway....)

Can anyone beat 11.5 inches (I mean SADDLE WIDTH!!)? Or do I have the widest saddle on HHO?

Oh meant to say that Mae is 14hh aswell lol. Shes also a gypsy cob!

I was going to ask the same as Katy, where do you get a saddle that fits?

I cant beat it but I can match it. Ive got a xx wide pathfinder saddle made to measure for my oversized highland. Its as wide as yours but 18 1/2". Lovely saddle but he changed shape shortly after I got it so its redundant now.

Mine came with my pony - it's pretty tatty but I'm very aware of how difficult it would be to find a new one that would fit so I'll stick with looking a bit scruffy for now!

Have looked at the thorowgood maxam saddles though - haven't measured but by looking at it I think the xxwide one might almost be big enough!

I think if I had to get a new saddle I'd have to get a made to measure one really!

xxKatyxx have you tried the saddle company, I believe the saddles they make will go to any width.

I did look into it, but the problem being most start at 15", and this is a shetland! 15" would almost cover his tail.

Reallistically I need something about 14" and 7" between d rings (which is alot for a 14"!).

There was a 2nd hand saddle co saddle in my local tack shop which had a 13.5" seat! It was sooooo wide... I almost borrowed it to try it out, but I think it would have permanently broken my mum's hips

lol, it's okay, Ididnt expect you to know lol. The only thing they sem to make for shetlands are these pad things, which are like numnahs with a girth. they look awful and I have visions of my kids ending up under his belly lol.

I had a treeless (heather moffatt) for Saff a few years ago it was truly horrid and slipped so much, I can understand the fear you have for children sliding round, if I see one on my travels I will let you know

I fear if we go for leather we'll have to have a crupper and a breastplate just to keep it on his back lol. I can find synthetic saddles no problem, but i'd like leather.

Thorowgood now make nice leather saddles and as you know, Thorowgood get pretty wide!! Also, with two interchangeable parts, not just the fish, they can be altered easily without too much expense after you have had it for some time, That is, a year or so down the line and you change horse/pony. (obviously you get the parts to fit when you buy it!!!)

I reckon my saddle would be close in width to yours, although I haven't measured it recently and can't remember the width. Mine is on a wide highland with no wither and a back like a table.

I tried many, including all those designed for the wider horse, and ended up with a cheap imported saddle, according to my saddler friend sometimes these are the best for wide ones as the points of the tree are much more flexible than english made or synthetic saddles
