The "winter grass" is so long,like a hay field

So I am very, very nervous about taking my two off their summer paddock, which is beginning to get cut up as they gallop around ....................

I think I will fence them off a very small area, feed them hay first and let them have 20 minutes on the new grass. Then slowly increase the time allowed.

Is that a good plan?

I would just put them on the long grass, it will work well as you'll find the grass cover will prevent it getting too muddy and there won't be much value in it either!

I am debating this point, as grass is about a foot long. Last time my mare got on long stuff she gave herself colic stuffing her face.
I presently move the fence about a foot at a time although this has meant the ground getting really muddy

Restrict the amount the horses have access to as they will just trample and waste it.

I stared to do this about 4 weeks ago; I sectioned off an area of about half an acre, let them on it for 20 mins a day for a few days then increased it over a couple of weeks. They are now on it 24/7 and I've made it much bigger. They do regulate themselves

I do this every winter, I have 5.5 acres altogether and by Feb the are usually on the whole lot which it lovely! doesn't get churned up either, I have 3 ponies
